LUBBOCK, Texas - Andre Emmett led Texas Tech with 23 points as the Red Raiders beat N.C.-Wilmington 85-76 Friday night.
Tech (1-0) never trailed after a 19-6 run in the end of the first half, which ended with Tech leading 45-33 on a 42-foot buzzer shot by Will Chavis.
With 4:12 left in the first half, Chavis hit two consecutive 3-pointers.
A few minutes later he intercepted a cross-court pass, took the ball the length of the court for an easy layup and a 41-33 lead. He drew a foul and sank the free throw.
Wilmington (0-1) missed on an ensuing shot and the outlet pass after a rebound by Tech forward Nick Valdez found Chavis near half court with just more than two seconds remaining.
He let the ball fly from mid-court and sank it from 42 feet as the buzzer sounded.
Chavis finished the game with 16 points, and Kasib Powell added 19.
Tech built a 17-point lead with about six minutes remaining in the second half at 75-58.
But Wilmington (0-1) narrowed the margin to 81-73 with about 1:13 left in the game but couldn't get any closer.
Brent Blizzard scored 29 points and Craig Callahan added 21, including 17 in the first half, for Wilmington.
Tech managed 11 steals and 19 turnovers.
The win gave Tech coach Bob Knight his 788th career victory.
