September 11, 2001 | Men's Golf
Tech went into the second round in second place and advanced to first after shooting a 284 in round two and a round three 279. The Red Raiders finished with a 54-hole score of 844 at 20-under par. This is Tech's first win under the direction of Head coach Greg Sands.
"It was unbelievable how they worked together as a team. I am excited for the seniors who seemed to step up and make things happen. And also, Andre Metzger who is a freshman really came through this tournament. It was a quality win against some great teams and I am really proud of the team," said Sands.
Senior Kyle Willmann (Edmond, Okla./Tyler JC) parred the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to defeat Geoffrey Harris of Old Dominion and claim the first place title. Willmann shot his lowest collegiate round of 66 in round three.
Senior David Bolen (Austin/Sam Houston State) finished one stroke behind Willmann, tying for third. Junior Mark Hull (San Antonio/Churchill) and Freshman Andre Metzger tied for 26th after shooting a one-over par 217 while Junior Brooks Kelly (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) shot a six-over par 222 to tie for 48th.
Tech will make their next appearance Oct. 1-2 at the Big "E" Classic in McKinney, Texas.
