LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's Brooks Kelly (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) defeated England's Oliver Wilson 2-up Wednesday morning to advance to the round of 32 at the 101st U.S. Amateur at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.
Kelly went 1-up after the fourth hole and never trailed in the match. He was 3-up after 10, but lost the next hole to drop back to 2-up. With two holes to play and two-hole edge, Wilson took advantage of a Kelly bogey on the 17th to cut the lead to one. Kelly won the 18th to seal the win and prevent the match from advancing to a playoff.
In Thursday's second round, Kelly will face Daniel Summerhays, son of Senior PGA Tour member Bruce Summerhays. The two will tee off at 6:50 a.m. (CT). The winner will advance to the third round later in the afternoon. The final two match play rounds will be televised on ESPN from 1-4 p.m.
Past winners of the event include Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.
