
Texas Tech Rallies Past Arizona State 9-8

FULLERTON, Calif. - Junior Kerry Hodges scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give Texas Tech a 9-8 come-from-behind win over the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday night at the NCAA Regionals in Fullerton, Calif.
With the win, Texas Tech improved to 42-19-1 overall and will face Cal Sate Fullerton in Sunday's championship game at 1 p.m. Texas Tech will have to beat the Titans twice in order to advance to next week's NCAA Super Regionals. Arizona State finished the 2001 season with a record of 37-20-1 overall and went 1-2 in the NCAA Tournament.
Arizona State's Rod Allen seemingly put the game out of reach when he hit a grand slam in the top of the fourth inning capping a six run Sun Devil inning. Behind 8-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Texas Tech's Chad Landry hit a double to left center field and Tyler Carson brought him home on an RBI single to pull Tech within four (8-4).
The Tech offense came to life in the last three innings as the squad put up five runs on seven hits and took advantage of three Sun Devil defensive miscues. Kerry Hodges scored the game winning run on a wild pitch by ASU reliever Drew Friedberg.
Senior Blake McGinley (4-3) earned the win for Texas Tech after tossing 4 2/3rds stellar shutout innings. Drew Friedberg suffered the loss for Arizona State and fell to 4-2 overall.
