Tech Netters Drop To New Mexico

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team (4-6, 0-1) fell in day two of the Corpus Christi Invitational today to the University of New Mexico (7-3), 4-3 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
This was the second meeting of the 2001 campaign between the two squads. New Mexico won the previous match 5-2 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The two victories for the Red Raiders came in the No. 2 and No. 6 positions.
Today started with the Red Raiders falling in doubles action. New Mexico earned the doubles point by winning the No. 1 and No. 2 position. The No. 3 position did not finish play.
In singles action, Royce Ramey proved he needed one match to return to his winning ways. He returned yesterday after tearing his rotator cuff in the first match of the season. After a loss yesterday, he bounced back to defeat New Mexico's Michael Polasek in the No. 2 position, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. He improves to 1-2 on the year.
Freshman Ben Gudzelak continued his success against New Mexico by defeating Bart Scott in three-sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. Earlier in the year, he defeated Polasek in straight sets. He improves his team leading record to 7-2, 0-1.
Richard Crabtree got revenge against Diego Garza in the No. 4 position by winning, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. He fell to Garza in the previous meeting in straight sets. Crabtree improves his 2001 record to 7-3, 0-1.
Tech will continue to compete in the Corpus Christi Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, March 11, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
