Tech Track Has Athletes Qualify for NCAA Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field team had one individual and one relay team provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships this past weekend at the Iowa State Invitational in Ames, Iowa.
Senior Gezachw Yossef provisionally qualified for the indoor championships in the 800 meters with a time of 4:03.58, finishing fifth in the event this past Saturday. Yossef also qualified and ran in the 800 at last year's national indoor meet.
The women's 4x400-meter relay squad of Ngozi Iwu, Melonie Barrow, Rachelle Evans and D'Andria Brigham qualified provisionally with a time of 3:40.11, taking second in the event Saturday.
Freshman Dwayne Benoit finished 17th in the 800 with a time of 4:10.09.
The men's distance medley squad of Benoit, Chris Ramirez, Antonio Franklin and Yossef took sixth in the DMR event Friday evening in a time of 9:49.84.
Junior Michael Beasley upped his high jump mark to 7-2.25. Beasley provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a mark of 7-1 at the Texas Tech Open, February 2 in Lubbock.
Freshman Tiffany Green continued to run well for coach Wes Kittley's squad, posting a time of 7.65 in the 60m preliminaries. Junior Monique Wright-Cruse ran 7.70 in the 60m preliminary, and senior Tami Zachary posted a time of 7.73 in the same event.
Green was the only Tech runner to qualify for the 60m finals, finishing 11th with a time of 11.62.
All three women ran in the 200m, with Zachary coming in eighth (24.47), Wright-Cruse ninth (24.49) and Green 14th (24.75).
Shannon Spaulding ran the 800m for the women, taking 14th in a time of 2:10.17. Leigh Daniel ran in her first race this season, finishing 11th in the 5000m in a time of 17:18.11.
