Tech Golf Completes First Round at The Nelson

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's golf team completed its first day of competition at The "Nelson" tournament in Palo Alto, Calif., shooting a combined score of 283. The Red Raiders are tied for fifth place, four strokes behind round one leader Florida Southern College and three strokes behind second place Washington, Purdue and Stanford.
Last year's individual tournament winner Steve Sokol of Florida Southern faced tough competition in the first round, trailing one stroke behind round one leader Lee Williamson of Purdue and battling North Carolina State's Jason Moon for a second place tie.
Two Red Raiders are in the top 15 with Lubbock native Brian Smith tied for sixth place, firing his season-best opening round of 69 (36, 33), while senior Kyle Willmann shot a 70 in the first round (36, 34), good for a 12th place tie.
Teammates Brad Jacobson and Brooks Kelly are tied for 32nd, each shooting an identical round of 72. Senior David Bolen struggled in the first day of competition, shooting a round of 73 (36, 37), enough to finish in 42nd place.
Play for the second round of 18 holes resumes tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. on the par-71 Stanford Golf Course.
