LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's soccer team had an offensive explosion taking 34 shots, 21 on goal, as the Red Raiders downed the SFA Ladyjacks 6-1 Wednesday night at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
Roxanne Frilot's second goal on the season, on an assist from Ellen McNamara, gave Tech (4-11, 0-6) a 2-1 lead that would never be challenged. The goal was scored as McNamara dropped back a pass that Frilot placed top shelf from 40 yards out.
SFA's (7-5, 3-4) lone goal came in the opening minutes as Kendra Cannon headed a crossing pass from Sarah Johnson into an empty net.
The Red Raiders would score six unanswered goals, the first coming in the 35th minute as Melanie Brosnahan scored her third goal in as many games, upping her season total to eight, on the first of two Kerri Campbell assists. SFA failed to clear a loose ball in its own zone allowing Campbell to win the free ball and pass it to Brosnahan who beat the Ladyjack keeper, giving Tech a 2-1 lead at the half.
"She is a true goal scorer," commented women's soccer coach Felix Oskam on the play of his senior forward. "She has a great presence around the goal and can turn and shoot."
Rachel Mavris scored her fourth goal of the season, on an assist from Campbell, as she beat SFA goalie Elizabeth Evatt low and to the far. Campbell would score the fourth Red Raider goal and her third and fourth points on the night, as she took an assist from Lindsey Wile and beat the keeper high 16 minutes into the second stanza.
All total, the Red Raiders got 17 points from seven different players led by Campbell's four. Brosnahan and Wile each scored a goal and had an assist giving them three points for the night, Tech got two points from Frilot, Mavris and Marie Valdez, who scored her first goal of the season and McNamara had one point.
"This is what we needed," said Oskam as his team heads into the final stretch of conference games, starting with Baylor Sunday afternoon in Waco.
