BATON ROUGE, La. - The Texas Tech soccer team lost its opening match of the LSU Invitational to the homestanding Tigers, 2-1, in another hardfought match Friday night.
LSU got on the board first in the match when Rachel Cohen scored unassisted from about 30 yards out in the 26th minute, beating Tech keeper JoDee Campbell for a 1-0 Tigers advantage.
The Red Raiders knotted the match at one in the 39th minute on a goal from freshman Tiana Boyea. Carrie Graham assisted on the goal, crossing the ball into Boyea into the box, who put it in the back of the net for her first career goal.
But LSU scored the game-winning goal 17 minutes into the second half, with Jenny DeMay scoring on an assist from Kara Dean.
Tech outshot its opponent for the third straight match, posting 12 shots to LSU's 11. Red Raider keeper Campbell made six saves in the contest, while a pair of LSU goalies made seven saves on the evening. Both teams played a very physical match, with Tech picking up 13 fouls to LSU's 18.
"It was another disappointing loss," Tech head coach Felix Oskam said. "We had some individual mistakes that cost us goals.
"We just have to keep plugging away and shooting so we can get our confidence back. We really need a win, and that would bring our confidence back. But it's a long season and I don't want our players to get down. If we can eliminate those individual mistakes, we'll be fine."
Tech continues action Sunday in the LSU Invitational when they play Mississippi at 11 a.m. The Red Raiders open the home slate on September 14 against West Texas A&M.
