OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (from the Big 12 Conference)-- Baylor advanced to the finals of the Big 12 Conference Phillips 66 tournament for the second year in a row with a 10-1 win to eliminate Texas Tech Saturday in game 12 at Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark.
The Bears, advancing to 45-14, now meet the winner of Saturday's 5 p.m. (CDT) contest between Oklahoma and Nebraska in the semifinals of the tourney. Nebraska edged Oklahoma 3-1 to force an "if necessary" contest Saturday afternoon.
Baylor lefty Josh Scott, the nephew of longtime Houston Astros' standout Mike Scott, twirled seven innings and got the win to move to 4-3 in 2000. He received ample support from a game-breaking three-run pinch hit homer by Ron Zboril in the fourth inning to lift the Bears to a 5-0 advantage. Jace Brewer later laced his 11th and 12th home runs of the year to bring home three runs for the Bears.
Tech's lone run came on a solo homer by outfielder Jason Rainey-his 13th of the campaign. Cory Sellars, who had worked 1/3 of an inning for an oft-injured Raiders' pitching staff, endured the loss and fell to 0-1 despite shutting out Baylor for the first three innings.
The Red Raiders dropped to 35-24 in 2000 and seek a school-record sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Regionals when invitations are announced on Monday, May 22. Last year six Big 12 schools made the NCAA field, and Oklahoma State and Texas A&M advanced to the NCAA World Series.
