Three Tech Tracksters Qualify Provisionally for Nationals

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech track athletes Ngozi Iwu, Desmond Johnson and Yossef Gezachw each qualified provisionally for next weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships at the Cyclone National Track and Field Qualifier Friday, in Ames, Iowa.
Iwu took second place in the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.58. Her time came in just off the automatic qualifying time of 2:07.10 for the event, but Iwu was well under the 2:09.60 mark set as the provisional qualifying standard.
Johnson placed third in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 46.65. Johnson narrowly missed the automatic qualifying time of 46.32 in the event. The provisional qualifying standard in the men's 800 is 47.05.
Gezachw rounded out the Tech qualifiers by coming in under the provisionally qualifying time of 4:05.20 with a 4:02.55 mark in the men's mile run. The automatic qualifying standard in the men's mile is four minutes.
NCAA officials will determine this week which provisional qualifiers will have the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Indoor Nationals to be held in Fayetteville, Ark., next Friday and Saturday.
