Texas Tech Softball Falls on Opening Day

Albuquerque, N.M. - The Texas Tech Softball team opened its 2000 sesaon on Friday with games against Colorado State and Cal-State Fullerton at the Diamond Invitational Tournament, hosted by the University of New Mexico.
The Red Raiders came up short in the opening game against Colorado State. The 4-2 loss came despite a solid first game pitching performance from Amanda Renfro, who pitched the complete game, giving up four earned runs off of eight hits in six innings. Both Shauna Briggs and Kristi Tunnell went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Colorado State held a 4-1 advantage heading into thge top of the seventh inning. Shortstop Paula Workman doubled to centerfield to start off the inning. Tunnell singled to bring Workman home two batters later and bring Tech to within two runs at 4-2. However, Colorado State pitcher Karla Keister struck out he final two Red Raider batters to end the threat and the game.
The second game started out well for the Red Raiders as they took advantage of some Cal-State Fullerton miscues to load the bases in the top of the first inning with only one out. However, that's when things started to go south for Tech and they eventually lost the contest 10-0
Lynsey Haij was called out because of an error on the official scorecard. Haij, who usually wears number 9 but was wearing number 16 for the game, apparently had reached first base and driven in a run to give Tech a 1-0 lead. However, the Fullerton coaches brought the line-up card error to the attention of the umpire. After a lengthy 20 minute discussion, it was decided that Haij would be called out and the runners had never advanced. From there, the Titans ended the inning with no damage done.
