LAS CRUCES N.M. - The Texas Tech softball team lost their opening game of the Troy Cox Classic Tournament this afternoon 2-0 in nine innings to the No. 22 ranked Illinois-Chicago Flames. The loss drops tech to 2-11 on the season. Amando Renfro, who pitched a complete game no-hitter, took the loss for the Raiders and is now 1-6 on the season.
The game was an all-out pitchers dual between Renfro and UIC's Samantha Iuli. Both pitchers no-hit their opposition until the bottom of the 7th inning when Tech's Shauna Briggs doubled to left field. Tech had a chance to put the game away with Briggs on third and Susie Gomez at first and one out. However Iuli retired the next two Raider batters to escape the inning.
Renfro (9IP, 11K's, 0H, 0BB) continued to baffle the Flame batters until the top of the 9th. The inning started with a Flames runner at second due to the international tie-breaker rule. As a result of two Tech errors, UIC scored two unearned runs. The Red Raiders failed to score in the bottom of the inning, ending the game.
Renfro's nine innings of scoreless ball ran her streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run to 25.1.
