Track Teams Fare Well In Season's First Meet

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's track and field teams saw their first competition of the season this weekend as they hosted the Red Raider Indoor Invitational at the Athletic Training Center on the Texas Tech campus.
The meet had a non-scoring format and was attended by schools from all over the state. Abilene Christian, UT-San Antonio, UT-Arlington, Odessa College, McMurry University, Wayland Baptist and Dallas Baptist were among the teams competing.
On the women's side, Leigh Daniel won the 5,000-meter run in a time of 17:17.0. Sipa Finau set an ATC record with her first-place throw 0f 17.21 meters in the weight throw.
On the men's side, Jesse Williams took first place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:34.6. Ty Williams won the Shot Put with a distance of 16.36 meters and teammate Jason Young was third with a distance of 14.29 meters. Desmond Johnson was strong in the 600 yard dash, winning with a time of 1:11.09.
The men's and women's teams are back in action next weekend as they travel to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin Invitational on Saturday, January 29.
