Red Raiders 3-4-1 After Hosting Shoot-Out
Texas Tech picked up another victory with a 3-0 triumph over North Texas last Saturday in the Four Points Sheraton Shoot-Out. It was sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Peese's second shutout of the year.
The Red Raiders scored their first goal in the first half at the 23:45 mark by sophomore midfielder Lauren Taylor.
Tech responded in the second half by scoring two more goals. Junior midfielder Jennifer Hamm scored a goal at 83:40 on a direct kick. Approximately four minutes later, junior defender Kelly Taylor kicked one in to put the Red Raiders up 3-0 to claim their third victory of the season.
Peese recorded three saves in 90 minutes of action, while Tech outshot UNT 22-4 and had four corner kicks to the Lady Eagles two. Hamm led the Red Raiders with five shots, including four on goal.
In the final game of the Four Points Sheraton Shoot-Out on Sunday, the Syracuse Orangewomen came away with the championship in a 4-0 triumph over the host Red Raiders. Syracuse went 2-0 in the shoot-out as Tech was 1-1 and North Texas 0-2.
Syracuse, a 1998 NCAA tournament participant, scored two goals in both halves.
Syracuse outshot Tech 14-9, while having seven corner kicks to the Red Raiders' two. Hamm had three shots, including two on goal. Three other Red Raiders had one shot apiece. Peese played all 90 minutes in the goal and tallied five saves.
This Week's Action
Texas Tech will travel to Fort Worth, Texas for a game against TCU on Friday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. and then will play Northwestern State on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.
TCU has a 5-2 record after beating Oklahoma 1-0 last Saturday. Senior midfielder Allison Calleri scored the lone goal on an assist from junior midfielder Jennifer Maunder. Sophomore goalkeeper Keith-Ann Wagner recorded seven games in the contest. The Sooners outshot the Horned Frogs 13-10 and had three corner kicks to TCU's two.
Northwestern State holds a 4-3-1 record after a 7-0 victory over Tennessee-Martin last Sunday. Junior forward Holly Horn led the Demons with three goals, while sophomore midfielder Missy Payne had two assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany Swinger played the first 45 minutes of the game and recorded three saves and senior Wendy Woodham played the last half of the contest and had one save. The Demons outshot Tennessee-Martin 18-4 and had six corner kicks to UTM's two.
Series Records
The Red Raiders are 2-3-1 against TCU, winning last year's meeting, 3-2, on Sept. 25. The last time the Horned Frogs won was during the 1997 season in a 4-3 triumph. Saturday will be the first meeting between Texas Tech and Northwestern State.
Sister Act
In last week's win over North Texas, sophomore midfielder Lauren Taylor scored her first career goal as a Red Raider at the 23:45 mark and then at 87:53, her older sister junior defender Kelly Taylor knocked her first career goal at Tech.
Shutout #2
For the second time in three games, sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Peese recorded a shutout as the Red Raiders captured a 3-0 win over North Texas, Sept. 18. The shutout marked Peese's second of the year and her sixth in her career. She has played in seven games for 637:58 minutes and has a 1.34 goals-against-average.
Graham and Hamm with Two
Sophomore forward Carrie Graham and junior midfielder Jennifer Hamm lead the Red Raiders with two goals each, while senior forward Kristy Frantz has a team-high two assists. Four players (Frantz, Lindsay Thompson, Kelly Taylor and Lauren Taylor) have each scored one goal apiece.
1999 Captains
Senior defenders Ashlyn Peterson and Jamie Woods and junior defender Kelly Taylor have been selected as this year's team captains.
Head Coach Felix Oskam
Felix Oskam begins his third season as head coach of the Red Raiders and has compiled a 17-22-4 record. Previously, Oskam had served as an assistant coach for the team during the 1995 and 1996 seasons.
Prior to coming to Tech in 1995, Oskam served for three years as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs at the University of Tulsa. During the 1993 season, the Tulsa women's program finished ranked 18th in the nation. In 1991, the Tulsa men's team achieved a national ranking of 17. Oskam is currently a staff coach and instructor fro the North Texas Soccer Association and a Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP). He also worked as a staff coach for the ODP in Oklahoma and coached the Blackwatch ?80 girls team select team in Tulsa.
Oskam played 12 years of club soccer in the Netherlands before attending the University of North Texas. While at North Texas, he helped guide the Eagles to their first national ranking and was twice chosen as a Texas Collegiate Soccer League All-Star.
Oskam holds a United States Soccer Federation 'A' license and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Home Again, Home Again
The Red Raiders return home to play Friday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. against Missouri and Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. against Kansas. Tech then plays again in Lubbock the following weekend against Texas Friday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. and Texas A&M Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m.
