EL PASO, Texas - The Texas Tech women?s soccer team defeated UTEP, 1-0, in the second game of the 1999 Reebok Miner Desert Scramble, being held at Charlie Davis Park in El Paso. The Red Raiders move to 2-3 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, the Red Raiders? Carrie Graham worked a give-and-go with teammate Kristy Frantz that gave Graham an open shot from seven yards out. Graham converted on the opportunity for the only score of the day. Tech out-shot the Miners 13-4, and had seven corner kick opportunities to UTEP?s three. The Miners? goalkeeper Amanda Smith kept the game close with seven stops. Tech?s Peese tallied two saves.
In the opening game of the tournament, New Mexico downed Creighton, 1-0, thanks to a second-half score by Jayme Dieringer. New Mexico improved to 2-3, while the Bluejays fell to 3-2. With under 20 minutes to play, Dieringer was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down just in front of the Creighton goal. The Bluejays? Maggie Phelan stopped the penalty shot, but Dieringer chased down the rebound and buried it from point-blank range. New Mexico dominated the game offensively, posting a 16-3 advantage in shots. Phelan had six saves in the game, while the Lobos? Shelly Hammock notched one save.
The Lobos and Texas Tech will meet in the third game of the tournament on Sunday at 10 a.m. MNT, while UTEP and Creighton will match up in the tournament?s final game, which is slated for 1 p.m. MNT on Sunday.
