Texas Tech Track and Field Opens Indoor Season

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's and women's track and field teams will open their 1999 indoor season on Saturday by hosting the Red Raider Open at the Athletic Training Center on the Texas Tech campus. The meet will consist of athletes from the Abilene Christian University, Dodge City Community College, Garden City Community College, Howard Payne University, McMurray College, New Mexico State University, Odessa Junior College, Ranger Junior College, Southwest Texas State University, Texas A&M University, University of Juarez, University of Texas-San Antonio and Wayland Baptist University. Texas Tech leads the way with 45 men and women participating in the Open.
The field events will begin at 9 a.m. with the women's weight throw. The running events will open at noon with the men's and women's preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles. The event is free to the public.
"We are very excited to host the Red Raider Open to begin our 1999 indoor season," Texas Tech Director of Track and Field Greg Sholars said. "The meet will provide an excellent opportunity for us to evaluate our training efforts."
The Texas Tech men's team is boosted by the return of three All-America sprinters. Four-time All America Desmond Johnson, three-time All America Josephus "Pap" Howard and 1998 indoor All-America Rohan McDonald are all scheduled to race on Saturday.
On the women's side, Evette Turner, who finished ninth in the mile at the NCAA indoor championships in 1998, will compete in the 1000-meters. Also, Sherri Coleman, who was one of the top junior college sprinters in the nation last year, will make her Texas Tech debut racing in the 55-meters.
The Red Raider Open is one of three home meets for Texas Tech this indoor season. The team will also host the Red Raider Indoor Invitational on January 29-30 and the Red Raider Indoor Classic on February 13. They will both be held at the Athletic Training Center.
