LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Jayson Mitchell scored a career-high 25 points Wednesday, leading Texas Tech to a 100-70 victory against North Texas and the Red Raiders' third consecutive win.
Texas Tech (3-1) won for the first time in two tries at United Spirit Arena, the school's new $62 million sports center, following a season-opening loss to Indiana.
The Red Raiders broke open a close game late in the first half with a 13-2 scoring run that was highlighted by 6 points by Mario Layne and 4 by Rayford Young.
North Texas (1-3) built a 23-20 lead midway through the first half behind the scoring of Chris Davis, who paced the Eagles with 24 points.
The Red Raiders then opened the second half by holding North Texas without a field goal for the first 5:56. Young stretched the lead to 63-46 with a 3-pointer with 14 minutes to play.
The Eagles never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
James Ware finished with 21 points for Tech while Layne added 16 points, Young finished with 14 and Brodney Kennard scored 11.
Deginald Erskin was the only other North Texas player in double figures with 14 points.
Tech led 49-39 at halftime and stretched the lead to 80-55 midway through the second half on a 3-pointer by Mitchell, one of seven he converted during the game.
A three-point play by Ware at the 1:11 mark allowed Tech to hit the 100-point mark for the first time this season.
