SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Texas Tech women's soccer team was defeated by No. 4 Nebraska, 10-1, in the opening game of the 1999 Big 12 Women's Soccer Championships at the Blossom Soccer Park in San Antonio, Texas, on Wednesday.

The Huskers, who claimed the No. 1 seed in the tournmament with a perfect 10-0-0 Big 12 regular-season mark, improved to 18-1-1 overall. Nebraska coach John Walker, who was named the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year on Tuesday, earned his 100th career victory to improve to 100-22-2 in his sixth year at Nebraska.
Texas Tech, the No. 8 seed in the tournament, finished the year with an 8-11-1 mark.
Husker sophomore midfielder Meghan Anderson opened the scoring for the Huskers with her 19th goal of the season at 18:31, before sophomore midfielder Shannon Tanaka posted the game-winner less than three minutes later with her fifth goal of the year at 20:59.
Freshman midfielder Kori Saunders added a pair of goals to send the Huskers to the locker room at halftime with a comfortable 4-0 cushion.
The Huskers, who outscored Big 12 opponents 50-3 during the regular season, continued to dominate the Red Raiders, tying a school record with six second-half goals.
Sophomore Najah Williams added a pair of second-half goals, while Kelly Rheem, Lindsay Eddleman, Brooke Jones and Christine Latham each added single goals for the Huskers.
Jenny Alfred scored Texas Tech's lone goal at 86:01 against Nebraska freshman goalkeeper Leah Lamale to prevent the shutout. The goal was the first allowed by Lamale this season.
Walker said Nebraska's opening round performance was exactly what the Huskers needed.
"It was a great result, and we definitely played well for most of the game," Walker said. "The biggest thing is that we were able to rest people, and we were able to limit the minutes of some of our players, which should help us as the tournament goes on."
Nebraska outshot Texas Tech, 19-6, and outcornered the Red Raiders, 8-0. Texas Tech goalkeeper Brittney Peese posted five saves for the Red Raiders, while Karina LeBlanc recorded one save for the Huskers.
The Huskers will continue their pursuit of the Big 12 Conference Tournament title on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. by playing the winner of the game between fourth-seeded Baylor and fifth-seeded Texas. The Big 12 title game is set for Saturday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
