
Texas Tech 5-6-1 After Splitting Weekend Soccer Games

LUBBOCK, Tex. - Texas Tech pulled off a 4-1 upset over No. 20 Missouri last Friday. It was the first Big 12 victory of the season for the Red Raiders. Tech jumped on the board just five minutes into the first half on a goal by sophomore Carrie Graham from senior forward Lizzy Biles. And then two minutes later, Graham scored again with an assist by junior defender Kelly Taylor, whose shot deflected off the top of the post to set up Graham for the score.
In the second half, Tech sophomore Lauren Taylor scored the Red Raiders other two goals with the first one coming at the 64:14 mark on an assist from senior forward Kristy Frantz. Three minutes later, Taylor knocked in another one. The Tigers scored their lone goal at the 72-minute mark. Texas Tech outshot Missouri 21-10 and had 12 shots-on-goal to the Tigers five. Both teams recorded two corner kicks each. Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Peese played all 90 minutes in goal and tallied four saves.
On Sunday, the Red Raiders fell to Kansas 3-2. The first half of the game remained scoreless as the first goal came in the second half at 71:30 by Kansas. Tech knotted the score at 1-1 at the 76th minute on a goal by Graham from junior midfielder Jennifer Hamm. The Jayhawks went on to score the next two goals within the next 10 minutes of play. Hamm knocked in Techs last goal with 44 seconds remaining in the game. Texas Tech outshot the Jayhawks 27-12 and had 18 shots-on-goal to Kansas eight. Tech also had five corner kicks, while Kansas had one. Peese once again played all 90 minutes in goal, recording three saves.
This Weeks Action
Texas Tech will finish its 1999 home schedule this week by hosting Texas on Friday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. and Texas A&M on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m.
Texas enters the weekend with a 5-5 record and 2-3 in Big 12 play. Last weekend, UT lost to Iowa State, 3-0, and Nebraska, 3-0. Sophomore midfielder Abby Gutowski and freshman Colleen Zea each have a team-high two goals, followed by four players with one goal apiece.
Junior midfielder Nicole Ramirez leads the Longhorns in shots with 24, including eight shots-on-goal. Senior goalkeeper Cami Varnadore has played in goal all 10 games, recording 65 saves and has allowed 16 goals, while having a 1.61 goals-against-average.
Texas A&M holds a 10-2 record and is 3-1 in conference action after losing to Nebraska, 1-0, and beating Iowa State, 4-1, last weekend. Junior forward Nicky Thrasher leads the Aggies in goals with 10, while junior midfielder Alison Peters has six.
Thrasher has also recorded team highs of 73 shots, 41 shots-on-goal and six assists. Freshman forward Heather Ragsdale also has six assists. Senior goalkeeper Melanie Wilson has played in all 12 games and has tallied 40 saves, allowed six goals and has a 0.52 goals-against-average.
Series Records
The Red Raiders are 2-2-1 against Texas as last years game ended in a 3-3 tie. The last time Tech beat UT was during the 1996 season in a 2-1 win in Austin, Texas. Texas was victorious 2-0 in Lubbock during the 1997 season.
Tech is looking for its first win over Texas A&M as the Aggies have won all five previous meetings. Last year, TAMU beat Tech 6-0 in College Station, Texas.
Graham Gets Second Game-Winning Goal
Sophomore forward Carrie Graham scored her second straight goal of the game vs. Missouri Oct. 1 for the game-winning goal as the Red Raiders upset No. 20 Missouri.
Two in a Row
For the first time this year, the Red Raiders posted back-to-back wins. On Sept. 25, Tech defeated Northwestern State, 3-0, and then last Friday defeated Missouri, 4-1.
Second Time in Two Years
The Red Raiders 4-1 triumph over No. 20 Missouri last Friday marked the second time Tech has beaten a ranked team. Last year, Tech won at No. 18 Maryland, 3-2.
Graham Paces Red Raiders with Six Goals
Sophomore forward Carrie Graham leads Tech with six goals on the year, including three that were scored last weekend. She also has a team-high 13 points and two game-winning goals. Graham is second on the team in shots with 38 and is third in shots-on-goal with 18.
Head Coach Felix Oskam
Felix Oskam is in his third season as head coach of the Red Raiders and has compiled a 19-24-4 record. Previously, Oskam had served as an assistant coach for the team during the 1995 and 1996 seasons.
Prior to coming to Tech in 1995, Oskam served for three years as an assistant coach for both the mens and womens programs at the University of Tulsa. During the 1993 season, the Tulsa womens program finished ranked 18th in the nation.
In 1991, the Tulsa mens team achieved a national ranking of 17. Oskam is currently a staff coach and instructor fro the North Texas Soccer Association and a Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP). He also worked as a staff coach for the ODP in Oklahoma and coached the Blackwatch '80 girls team select team in Tulsa.
Oskam played 12 years of club soccer in the Netherlands before attending the University of North Texas. While at North Texas, he helped guide the Eagles to their first national ranking and was twice chosen as a Texas Collegiate Soccer League All-Star.
Oskam holds a United States Soccer Federation 'A' license and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The Red Raiders return home to play Texas Friday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. and Texas A&M Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. for the last two home games of the season. Before Sundays game, this years five seniors will be honored.
