Tech Prepares for Strong Finish to Season

Tech set to battle Colorado College
After wrapping up their 1997 home season, the Red Raiders will now embark on a five game road swing that will hopefully lead to the Big 12 Championships in San Antonio on Nov. 6-9. The first game of that road trip will be on Oct. 17 as Tech takes on perennial soccer powerhouse Colorado College. Game time is 4 p.m. in Colorado Springs. The Tigers are 8-5-2 on the season. They are led by Martina Holan, who has 27 points on 11 goals and five assists. Mary Everett follows with five goals and two assists for a total of 12 points. Goalkeeper Robyn Bilski has started in all 15 games for the Tigers. In her 1,430 minutes of play, Bilski has a goals against average of .798. She has 95 saves and 24 goals against. Colorado College, a fixture in NCAA tournament from 1984-1991, claimed the national runner up title in 1986 and 1989. It will be the first meeting between Texas Tech and Colorado College.

Colorado last Big 12 test for Red Raiders
After battling a tough non-conference opponent, Tech will turn their attention to their final Big 12 game of the season. Tech will take on Colorado on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Buffalos are 3-9 on the season and 3-3 in Big 12 action. They are led by Donna Holyman, who has four goals and two assist on the season. Goalkeeper Sloane Cox has played 801 minutes this season and has a goals against average of 1.44. She has 75 saves and 13 goals against on the year. Goalkeeper Nina Bjornstad has seen 326 minutes of action. She has a goals against average of 2.75, with 32 saves and 11 goals against. In the last meeting between the two teams, Tech claimed a 2-1 victory in Lubbock. Kristy Frantz scored twice and Stacy Livingston was credited with one assist.

Red Raiders lose to nationally ranked Aggies
The Texas Tech women's soccer team was defeated 4-2 by the number three ranked Texas A&M Aggies last Friday.

The Red Raiders scored first, as sophomore forward Kristy Frantz nailed a penalty kick in the fourth minute of play. The Aggies answered that with a goal from junior forward Sharon Pickering in the eighth minute of play. Freshman midfielder Alison Peters was credited with the assist. Ten minutes later, freshman forward Lindsey Thompson scored the Red Raiders' second goal of the game. Texas A&M once again answered with a score from Peters in the 36th minute.

Two minutes into the second half, Sonia Ibanez and Pickering teamed up to assist Peters on her second goal of the game. Senior forward Bryn Blalack scored the fourth goal for A&M in the 78th minute.

"It was the best effort in intensity that I have seen this team play. I want them to play with emotion and play smart. They played with emotion and I was happy about that. I wanted to see if they could rise to the occasion against a very good A&M team, and they did that today, " Texas Tech Head Coach Felix Oskam said.

Texas Tech took 11 shots on goal, two corner kicks and committed four fouls. Freshman goalkeeper Kellie McCallister had seven saves.

Texas A&M took 25 shots on goal, 18 corner kicks and committed 15 fouls. Sophomore goalkeeper Melanie Wilson had four saves.

Season Notes
* Feshman forward Lindsey Thompson scored her first goal of the seaosn against Texas A&M. Her successful shot came in the 18th minute of play.

* For the first time this season, Tech lost a game that was tied at half. Until Friday, the Red Raiders were 3-0 when a game was tied at intermission.

Did you know...
Sophomore defender Stephenie McCoy has already earned a letter as a Texas Tech athlete. McCoy played softball for Texas Tech last season.

McCoy spent most of the season in the outfield but also saw time as catcher. In her 30 game appearances, she had an overall batting average of .259 in 54 at bats. She had three RBIs and 16 putouts.

McCoy plays defender for the soccer team. She played high school soccer at Albuquerque's La Cueva High. That team holds the national record for most consecutive state championships (seven).

Big 12 Soccer Championship
The 1997 Big 12 Conference Soccer Championship will be held November 6, 7, 9 at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. The top six teams based on regular season results will qualify for the tournament. A point system used throughout the season will determine those teams and their respective seedings.

Head Coach Felix Oskam
This season will mark a new beginning for Felix Oskam and the Texas Tech women's soccer program. Oskam, who served as an assistant for two years, took over the program this season.

Prior to coming to Tech in 1995, Oskam served for three years as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs at the University of Tulsa. During the 1993 season, the Tulsa women's program finished ranked 18th in the nation. In 1991, the Tulsa men's team achieved a national ranking of 17. Oskam is currently a staff coach and instructor for North Texas Soccer Association, a Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP) staff coach and the Director of Coaching for the girls competitive team, the Lubbock Elite Soccer Club. He has also worked as a staff coach for the ODP in Oklahoma and coached the Blackwatch '80 girls select team in Tulsa.

Oskam played 12 years of club soccer in the Netherlands before attending the University of North Texas. While at North Texas, he helped guide the Eagles to their first national ranking and was twice chosen as a Texas Collegiate Soccer League All-Star. Oskam holds a United States Soccer Federation National "A" license and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
