Red Raiders turn their focus to Big 12 play
IOWA CITY, Iowa โ Texas Tech (8-4) fell to Iowa (9-3) in four sets on Saturday afternoon in the team's finale at the Kwik Star Klassic.
Sara Bowcutt led the way again with 16 kills followed closely by Gretchen Sigman who had 14 while also hitting .591. Elia Dinsmore and Tatum Johnson combined for 17 kills to round out the major scorers. Katelyn Cochran finished the match with 38 assists and 10 digs for her third double-double of the season as she was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Sigman led the way at the net with four blocks. Emily Contreras and Maddie Smotherman combined for 15 digs to hold down the backline.
The first power four matchup for the Red Raiders proved to be just that, a power matchup. The Hawkeyes took the first set 25-22 in a back-and-forth affair with both teams going on runs and taking leads with nine ties and four lead changes. Bowcutt continued her strong play with six kills on .500 hitting in the opener.
The second set was more of the same, but the Red Raiders were able to get their biggest lead of the match up to that point, going up 15-10 at the media timeout after holding a 5-2 lead to open up the set. Tech held an 18-11 lead before the Hawkeyes got some points back to force a Red Raider timeout at 21-18. Tech held onto the lead and won 25-22 to even it up.
Going into the third set, nearly all stats between the teams were identical to no one's surprise with each team scoring 47 points up to that point. The Red Raiders rode out to a 4-0 lead to force an early Iowa timeout. Sigman was sharp in the set with four kill and two blocks while hitting .533 in the match up that point. The Hawkeyes responded and took a late lead at 18-17 and eventually went on to take the set 25-20.
Set four was all Hawkeyes as the fatigue of the weekend and long travel day took a toll on the Red Raiders. Iowa jumped out to a 10-2 lead and kept its foot on the gas to win 25-19 to take the match.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will begin Big 12 play at home against Iowa State and Kansas on Friday and Sunday, respectively, at the United Supermarkets Arena.
