Tech improves to 4-0 at home

LUBBOCK, Texas โ Texas Tech (7-2) defeated Tarleton State (3-7) 3-1 on Tuesday night in front ofย 2,649 students, a record for volleyball. Tatum Johnson was on another level tonight, recording a career-high 16 kills on a .650 hitting percentage.
Shelby Ignash also recorded double-digit kills with 10 while hitting .471 and getting in on eight blocks. Maddie Smotherman and Emily Contreras held down the back line, each recording 10 digs and having just one serve receive error combined. Katelyn Cochran commanded the offense with 41 assists while posting two aces and six digs.
The wealth was spread on offense as Gretchen Sigman and Kenna McKenzie each got six kills and Sara Bowcutt and Elia Dinsmore both had five while Cochran added three of her own to round out the major scorers.
Tarleton came out swinging in the first set and looked in total control as they hit .308 while holding the Red Raiders to just a .034 hitting percentage as they took the set 25-14.
Tech battled back with a set two win that they took 25-22 after falling behind 15-10 going into the media timeout. The Red Raiders came out of the break on a 7-2 run to tie the set and would close out the set thanks to back-to-back kills off the arm of Gretchen Sigman.
The third set was a battle back-and-forth with the largest lead in the early going being 15-11 in favor of Texas Tech going into the break. The Red Raiders were able to stave off a few small runs by the Texans to secure the 25-20 win and take a 2-0 lead.
The fourth set was all Red Raiders. Tech hit a blistering .522 and took a commanding 15-8 lead at the media timeout. The Texans mustered just five more points after that as Tech, with an electric home crowd backing them, won 25-13 to improve to 7-2 on the year.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will be in Iowa this weekend to compete in the Kwik Star Klassic against Iowa, West Florida and Central Arkansas.
