Tech closes out series sweep of UNM Tuesday
April 07, 2026 | Baseball
The Red Raiders used three in the eighth and three in the ninth to sweep the season series from UNM for the first time since 2018
ALBUQUERQUE -- Down 3-0 early, Texas Tech outscored New Mexico, 10-2, over the final six innings to win 10-5 Tuesday afternoon at the Lobo Baseball Field.
In the victory, Texas Tech (19-13) exploded for three runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to win for just the second time in Albuquerque since 2019.
The Red Raiders also swept the season series from New Mexico (19-12-1) for the first time since 2018 and have now won three-straight midweeks against UNM (twice) and ACU. The Red Raiders run-ruled UNM (12-2) back on Mar. 24 in eight innings.
Being no-hit through three, Tech used a lead-off walk and a sharp single from Hughes to place the first two batters on base in the fourth.
The Red Raiders ultimately scored their first run of the ballgame on a UNM wild pitch.
After allowing a run in the first and two runs in the second (one unearned), Tech starter Kaysen Raineri found his groove over the final two innings of his outing, retiring the final six in order.
Raineri who tossed four innings of three run ball, earned his third win of the season. He struck out four batters and did not walk anyone.
Within 3-1, the Red Raiders got a wind-aided double from Tracer Lopez to open the fifth and a walk from Robin Villeneuve to place the tying runs on base. After a wild pitch put Lopez at third and Villeneuve at second, the Red Raiders tied the game on a hustle two-run double from Kyeler Thompson.
Tech ultimately took the lead for good on back-to-back productive 4-3 ground outs from Caden Ferraro and Connor Shouse.
Shouse who also doubled home a run in the ninth after tossing a scoreless eighth inning, drove in runs 45 and 46 on the season.
Armed with the lead, the Red Raiders turned to righty Bryce Suiter, who with the bases loaded with one out coaxed a pop-up to right that was caught by Jesse Ruisnek.
With the runner breaking for the plate, Rusinek uncorked a perfect throw that beat a sliding Caleb Herd to end the inning and keep the Red Raiders on top.
Behind a strong scoreless inning apiece from Logan Addison and Jonny Lowe, the Red Raiders stayed in front 4-3 until the eighth, when the Red Raiders used an RBI double from Rusinek, a Matt Quintanar sac-fly and a wild pitch to take a 7-3 lead.
After the scoreless frame from Shouse, the Red Raiders used the RBI double from the infielder turned pitcher and a two-run single from Linkin Garcia to take a 10-3 lead to the bottom of the ninth.
In the ninth, UNM pulled to within 10-5 and had the bases loaded before Rusinek struck out Gene Trujilio on three pitches to seal the win.
In the win, Tech scored three times in three different innings to bring their crooked number total to 49 on the season. For comparison, the Red Raiders scored three-plus in an inning just 43 times. The Red Raiders are also now 15-2 in the 17-games they have had multiple crooked numbers.
