Red Raiders fall to No. 29 Arizona State

LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite forcing five tiebreak sets in singles, the No. 66 Texas Tech Red Raiders fell to the No. 29 Arizona State Sun Devils, 3-4, on Friday night at the McLeod Tennis Center.

Texas Tech (12-9, 2-4 Big 12) lost the doubles point to the Arizona State Sun Devils (15-8, 2-3 Big 12). First, Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri fell to Roi Ginat and Jelani Sarr on court one, 6-4. Shortly after on court two, Milos Mikovic and Ofek Shimanov defeated Sebastian Abboud and Tyler Stewart, 6-4. Play was left unfinished on court three with Felipe Pagnacco and Thomas Van Den Dooren leading Shu Matsouka and Nilels Villard, 5-4.

To start singles play Arsic opened with a quick straight-set win on court one over Shimanov, 6-4, 6-4, tying up the score at 1-all. Soon after, Ginat took down Abboud, 6-2, 6-4, on court six to give the Sun Devils back the lead. On court four, Matsouka beat Pagnacco, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, to push the Arizona State advantage to 3-1. Giving the Red Raiders their second point of the match was Ludovico Vaccari after he defeated Sarr on court three, 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-2.

Stewart had some of the most eventful sets on the night after taking his first two sets to tiebreaks against Arizona State captain Mathias Bondaz. On his match point in the final set, Stewart was down 0-40 and fought back to clinch the match on court two, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 6-2, to tie the contest at 3-3. On court five, Guglieri battled it out against Villard all the way through a tiebreaker third set, and after defending three match points, he ultimately fell, 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-7 (7).Â
