Tech falls in 11 to Houston Friday
April 03, 2026 | Baseball
The Red Raiders led 10-7 going to the ninth before seeing UH answer with three in the ninth and three in the 11th
Down 3-0 after the top of the first and 7-4 heading to the bottom of the sixth, Texas Tech (17-13, 4-7 Big 12) responded with a run in the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the eighth to take a 10-7 lead.
The big blow in both the sixth and seventh innings was an RBI double and a two-RBI single from Robin Villeneuve. It was Villeneuve's bases loaded two-out, two-run single in the seventh that gave Tech an 8-7 lead, before a Logan Hughes RBI single put Tech on top 9-7.
Hughes went 4-5 on Saturday and also was hit by a pitch.
Turning to left fielder and closer Jesse Rusinek, the Red Raiders saw Houston (15-14, 3-8 Big 12) put the first two men of the inning on base with a double from Tre Broussard and a
Blake Fields walk. Broussard, who went 4-for-5 on Saturday with four runs scored finished a home run shy of the cycle.
With right-handed batters coming up, Texas Tech turned to third baseman and right-handed pitch Connor Shouse who allowed a 2-2 double and a sac-fly to make the game 10-9 with one out.
Midway through an at-bat, Shouse was tagged with a balk that allowed Xavier Perez to come in and score to tie the game.
Shouse ultimately struck out back-to-back Cougars with the bases empty to keep the game deadlocked at 10.
After the Red Raiders got just a two-out hit-by-pitch in their turn in the ninth, both sides fired scoreless 10th innings to send the game to the 11th, tied at 10.
In the top of the 11th, UH used back-to-back singles with one out to place two runners on against Tech lefty Jorden Espinoza.
Looking to escape the damage, Espinoza coaxed a first pitch flyout to put the second out of the inning on the board, before a six pitch walk loaded the bases.
With the tying run 90-feet away, UH used a four-pitch walk and a two-run double from former Red Raider Antonelli Savattere to take an 13-10 lead to the bottom of the 11th. On the two-run double, Rusinek and second baseman Tracer Lopez executed a perfect 9-4-2 relay to gun down a third runner at the plate.
After a lead-off walk from Shouse, Houston's Chris Scinta used a fly out, a strikeout and a 5-3 putout to seal the game two and series win for Houston.
In the setback, the Red Raiders had 22 hits including four from Caden Ferraro, four from Hughes and four from catcher Matt Quintanar.
Moving up into the two hole in the order, Ferraro went a perfect 4-4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. Ferraro reached base in all five trips to the plate before being lifted from the game in the top of the ninth for the defensive changes that allowed Rusinek to pitch.
The Red Raiders also saw true freshman Tommy Hanger make his collegiate debut Friday, as the Canadian was put into the game at third base as a defensive replacement when Shouse came into to pitch in the Hanger. He struck out in his first career at-bat in the 10th.
UP NEXT:
Coming off the strongest start of his career last Sunday in Fort Worth, Tech will turn to redshirt freshman Jackson Burns in the series finale Saturday. First pitch from Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park is set for Noon.
