LUBBOCK – Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland has officially announced the signing of transfer guard Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn who will join the Red Raider program as a senior for the 2026-27 season. Gibbs-Lawhorn played at UNLV last season where he led the team and Mountain West Conference with 20.7 points per game along with making 101 3-pointers and earning MW Newcomer of the Year and All-MW First Team.
A 6-foot-1 guard from Lafayette, Indiana, (Dravyn) Gibbs-Lawhorn was at UNLV for one season after starting his career at Illinois where he played as a freshman and sophomore. Through three collegiate seasons, he has 998 points, 116 assists and has made 134 3-pointers through 98 career games. A three-time MW Player of the Week and starter in all 35 games for the Runnin' Rebels, Gibbs-Lawhorn scored in double figures in 33 games with a career-high 42-point performance against Nevada in a game where he went 8-for-14 on 3-pointers. He finished his junior season with six games scoring over 30 points and finished his season with 29 points in a loss to Tulsa in the NIT. Gibbs-Lawhorn shot 101-for-244 (41.4%) on 3-pointers for the season with 18 games making three or more. Along with making a career-high eight 3-pointers in the overtime win over Nevada, he made six 3-pointers in games against Fresno State, Boise State, Colorado State and Grand Canyon. Â He finished the season with 89 assists, 52 steals and made 257 shots (49.7%) and 109 free throws (83.8%).
Gibbs-Lawhorn led the Mountain West in scoring and was 21st nationally with his 20.7 points per game and was second in the MW by shooting 41.4% from beyond the arc and making 2.89 3s per game. His 257 made field goals led the MW and was seventh nationally while he also led UNLV with 1.5 steals per game, including a career-high five steals against La Sierra.
As a sophomore at Illinois in the 2024-25 season, Gibbs-Lawhorn appeared in 35 games with two starts – finishing the season averaging 5.9 points per game and making 25 3-pointers. He would score in double figures in nine games in his second college season, including producing a season-high 21 points with four 3-pointers against Eastern Illinois and going for 17 points and five assists at Wisconsin. He played in 28 games as a true freshman, scoring 2.4 points per game with eight 3-pointers – including scoring 18 points in his collegiate debut against Eastern Illinois.
Gibbs-Lawhorn entered college after playing at Word of God Christian Academy in North Carolina and with Overtime Elite. He was a four-star recruit who also spent time playing at Montverde Academy, Real Salt Lake Academy and McCutcheon High School. He was a reserve at Montverde when the team won the 2022 GEICO National Championship.
ESPN ranked Gibbs-Lawhorn at No. 82 in its top 100 men's basketball players in the transfer portal.
Texas Tech is coming off its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament under McCasland and a 23-11 overall record. Through three seasons under McCasland, the Red Raiders are 74-31 after a season where the team earned a program record four wins over Top 10 teams. Tech was ranked throughout the 2025-26 season for the first time in program history – ranking as high as No. 10 and finishing the season at No. 21 in the AP Top 25. Gibbs-Lawhorn is the third player to sign with Tech from the transfer portal this offseason after Cruz Davis and Damarion Dennis and joins incoming freshman DaKari Spear who signed with the program on November 13, 2025. Spear is a 6-foot-5 guard from Dallas who played at Dynamic Prep and earned a four-star recruiting rating.
