The Red Raiders saw a three-game midweek winning streak snapped
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Baseball saw its three-game midweek winning streak snapped Wednesday night, as the Red Raiders fell 13-8 to UIW at Daw Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Up 4-2 after two and 4-3 heading to fourth, Texas Tech (20-16) saw UIW (18-19) score three in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the seventh to take an 11-4 lead.
Down by seven runs, the Red Raiders used back-to-back doubles from catcher Matt Quintanar and Jesse Ruisnek to pull to within 11-7.
The double from Quintanar scored freshman Linkin Garcia (double) from second and DH Caden Ferraro (walk) from first.
After a wild pitch put Rusinek on third base, Davis Rivers pinch-hit and worked a six-pitch walk to bring lead-off hitter Kyler Thompson to dish with runners on the corners.
Ahead in the count (2-1), Thompson singled to score Rusinek, bringing the tying run to the plate.
UIW immediately went to the bullpen and signaled for Hayden Cirspin who coaxed a fly out to left to end the threat. Crispin and reliever Ashton Perkins combined to throw the final 2.1 innings of game action on Wednesday and allowed just one base runner on a Caden Ferraro single in the ninth. Â
With a bit of momentum for the first time scoring three times in the second to lead 4-2, the Red Raiders saw UIW put the first two runners of the inning on base on a pair of infield singles.
After a 6-6-3 double play ball, the Red Raiders issued a full-count walk and a stolen base to put runners on second and third with two out for Preston Newberry.
Facing a new pitcher in Tech reliever Jonny Lowe, Newberry hit a well-placed full-count single to score the final two runs of the ballgame. The hit gave the Cardinals a 13-8 lead.
In the setback reliever Bryce Suiter took the tough-luck loss, as after entering with two runners on and one out and striking out a pair in a 4-3 game in the third, Suiter allowed back-to-back-to-back home runs to lead-off the fourth.
At the plate, the Red Raiders got three hits in five at-bats from Thompson who drove in three, and a pair of hits from Ferraro (2-for-2) and Rusinek (2-for-5).
