The Frisco native scored the game-winning goal and played the full 90 in Techโs 2-0 win Friday night over Arizona State
IRVING, Texas โ After scoring her first career goal and playing a full 90 minutes in Tech's 2-0 win over ASU, Texas Tech freshman Lauren Alvarez was tabbed Big 12 Freshman of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Making a major impact as the calendar turns to October, Alvarez scored her first career goal Friday night, a wicked left-footed shot from just outside the 18-yard box. The blast gave Tech a 1-0 lead and served as the matches game-winning goal.
In addition to scoring, Alvarez also pitched in on the defensive end for the Red Raiders as she helped the Red Raiders hold Arizona State without a shot for the first half and a Big 12 low five for the entire match. ASU was held scoreless for just the second time this season as the Red Raiders joined No. 1 UNC as the only teams to shutout the Sun Devils this season.
Alvarez, who has started the last six games in succession, becomes the third Red Raider this season to earn a weekly award following Kylie Bahr (Sept. 9) and Eleanor Hays (Sept. 16). The Red Raiders have won five of Alvarez's six starts (5-0-1).
Tech opens a three-match road swing on Thursday night in Stillwater. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
