Tech uses 15 aces to power past the Hornets
ATHENS, Georgia – The Red Raiders used 15 aces – the most since at least 2009 – to take down Alabama State in four sets on Friday afternoon to close out their time in Athens. Tech dropped the first set but quickly regrouped to pick up its fourth win of the season.
Four different Red Raiders recorded double-digit kills including Aliyah McDonald (10), Addie Kanouff (11), Reagan Engler (12) and Kenna McKenzie (13). McDonald, Kanouff and McKenzie all hit over .400, McDonald leading the pack with a .455 hitting percentage.
Peyton Dunn had another 40+ assist performance, dropping 45 dimes in the match and notching two aces and six digs to go along with her setting.
Sierra Grizzle and Ashlyn Bellamy recorded double-digit digs as Grizzle led the team with 12 and Bellamy right behind her at 10. Bellamy also recorded a team-high four aces, three of which came in the final four points of the match.
Emily Contreras tied her career-high for aces with three as Engler added three aces of her own. Jasmine Martin, Katelyn Cochran and Grizzle also added aces.
How it happened:
Neither team hit well in the first set, Texas Tech (4-2) hitting .048 and Alabama State (0-6) hitting .114, but the Hornets were able to get the points when they needed them and took the set with a 25-23 win.
The Red Raiders responded in a big way in set two, going up 7-1 and not looking back. McDonald and McKenzie each recorded four kills and Tech used four aces to completely dominate the set 25-14 to tie the match.
The next set was more back and forth, but McKenzie's five kills and Tech posting four aces again helped push the Red Raiders over the top. Alabama State's Jyriah Morgan has a big set, picking up 9 of her 19 kills in that set while hitting .467 but her solid performance would not be enough as Tech outlasted the Hornets for a 25-22 win to take a 2-1 lead.
Engler was the go-to attacker for Tech recording six kills and hitting a scorching .462 to ensure the team's fourth win of the season. McKenzie had a big set as well, going for four kills while hitting .571 as Kanouff and McDonald combined for five kills. Bellamy closed out the match with three aces in the final four points as the Red Raiders won the fourth set with authority as they ended their trip to Athens, Georgia.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders be back on the road as they head to Flagstaff, Arizona for the NAU Tournament starting Friday.
