LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics announced Thursday the hiring of Aaron Uzzell, who has returned to his alma mater in the role of Assistant Athletics Director for strength and conditioning.
Uzzell, a longtime member of the football strength and conditioning staff from 1997-2015, began his second tenure at Texas Tech earlier this summer. In his new role, Uzzell with oversee the overall strength and conditioning programing for all 17 sports as part of Texas Tech's health and wellness unit.
"We are excited to welcome Aaron back to lead our strength and conditioning department," said Grant Stovall, who oversees Texas Tech's Health and Wellness unit as a Senior Associate Athletics Director. "He has a long history with Texas Tech and brings a diverse background of experience to the department. Aaron has worked with most of our sports in his past stint with Texas Tech. He is uniquely qualified and has the respect of our coaches, staff and all those he has worked with and trained along the way."
Uzzell served on the football strength and conditioning staff under four head coaches during his first stint at Texas Tech, beginning under Spike Dykes and continuing under Mike Leach, Tommy Tuberville and Kliff Kingsbury. The Red Raiders made 15 bowl appearances during his tenure on the football staff as Texas Tech was among the most frequent postseason participants in the country.
Administratively, Uzzell helped design and manage three Texas Tech weight facilities that opened during his tenure. He also administered the nutritional products and education for football student-athletes during most of his first stint at Texas Tech, while also managing the student-athlete schedules for spring, summer and fall workouts.
Uzzell's impact on the football program was felt by the number of NFL veterans who would return to Lubbock during the offseason to work with him. Uzzell has been regarded as a top trainer for NFL prospects heading to the NFL Combine as he worked with nearly 30 NFL Draft selections during his tenure and countless others who signed undrafted free agent agreements.
Since leaving Texas Tech, Uzzell has continued to work with numerous Red Raider alumni as the owner and operator of TXL Training Facility in Lubbock. He joined Frenship ISD in 2019 as the head strength and conditioning coach where he managed the strength program for all sports, while also assisting in the physical rehabilitation of athletes during and after injury.
Uzzell, who served as a graduate assistant coach for one year prior to being hired full-time, earned his bachelor's in exercise and sports science from Texas Tech in 1997. He is a certified strength and conditioning coach (SCCC), a strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) and a master strength and conditioning coach certified.
Uzzell and his wife, Amy, are longtime Lubbock residents and have twin sons, Aiden and Archer.
