LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite a two-run home run from Davis Rivers and four RBIs, Texas Tech Baseball fell Sunday afternoon to UCF, 15-6 at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
After falling behind 6-0 after 1.5 innings, Texas Tech (18-30, 12-15 Big 12) pulled to within 7-4 and 8-6, before allowing four in the seventh and three in the ninth.
Junior Zane Petty took the ball on Sunday and after recording a pair of outs in the first, allowed four runs on an RBI single, a two-run home run and back-to-back doubles. On the final double, Tech threw out UCFs (27-24, 8-19 Big 12) Braden Calise at third. Petty lasted just three innings and allowed eight hits and seven runs (all earned) in his fourth loss of the season.
In the bottom of the first, the Red Raiders saw Logan Hughes hit by a pitch, bringing Damian Bravo to the plate. On the third pitch he saw from Matt Sauser, Bravo lifted a deep fly ball that was caught at the wall. The hit-by-pitch for Hughes extended his on-base streak to 34-straight games.
After UCF added two more runs on another two-run home run, Rivers scored Villeneuve on an RBI double.
Following another UCF solo home run in the third made it 7-1 Knights, Bravo plated Hughes from first on another RBI double. The extra-base hit brought Tech to within 7-2.
In the fourth, Tech turned to righty Lukas Pirko who retired the Knights 1-2-3 to send the game to bottom of the inning.
With Villeneuve on first base and one out, Rivers delivered two more runs when he launched his fifth home run of the season off the scoreboard in right-center. The two-run blast left the bat at 111 MPH and 424-feet.
After UCF plated a lead-off triple from Andrew Williamson to take an 8-4 lead, the Red Raiders got the 17th home run of the season from Hughes to once again pull to within three runs (8-5). Williamson went 4-for-5 on Sunday afternoon hitting for the cycle.
Tech answered with its sixth and final run of the game in the sixth on a sac-fly by Rivers.
Down just 8-6, the Red Raiders saw UCF load the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh. The Knights ultimately scored four in the frame. The big hit in the frame was a two-RBI single from shortstop Antonio Jimenez. On the afternoon Jimenez went 5-for-5 with five RBI and four runs scored.
UCF ultimately added its final three runs in the ninth on a three-run home run from freshman Mateo Gray to close out the 15-6 win.
