No. 11 Tech takes down BYU in game one
May 01, 2025 | Softball
Tech uses 13 hits to score nine runs in win
Alana Johnson continued to stay hot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and scoring three runs while also drawing a walk and stealing her 11th base of the season. Lauren Allred and Bailey Lindemuth also had multiple hits as they both went 2-for-4 with a run scored as Allred picked up another RBI.
Canady led the way offensively with three hits and four RBI including a double and a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning. Lindemuth, Victoria Valdez and Demi Elder also recorded doubles, Elder reaching base safely now in 19 of the 20 games she's started since returning from injury.
Tech's defense had another solid outing, recording a double play and not having any errors. Hailey Toney and Lindemuth held down the left side of the infield with some athletic plays to save hits.
How it happened:
Tech jumped out to an early lead after Mihyia Davis led off the game with a single into right field. Demi Elder then drove her home in the next at-bat with a double to left center field.
The second inning was identical to the first just with different players. Alana Johnson got on base to lead off the inning after working a walk and then the proceeding at-bat NiJaree Canady lined a double into the left field gap to score Johnson from first and make it a 2-0 game.
The Red Raiders added three more runs in the third on a Lauren Allred RBI single up the middle and then a Johnson two-RBI single that went down the left field line, making it 5-0.
The Cougars got one back in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run. Canady quickly got that run back with a single that scored Johnson who reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.
After a series of interesting events in the sixth inning, Canady added more insurance to the Tech lead with a two-run blast into left center field on a 2-0 count.
After a brief 'sun delay' Mihyia Davis added the final Tech run across with an RBI on a fielder's choice.
Samantha Lincoln and Brenlee Gonzales went back-and-forth in the circle for the final four outs of the game. The Cougars added three runs late in the seventh inning, but nothing to make the Red Raiders too nervous as they closed out the game and improved to 19-3 in Big 12 play.
UP NEXT: Tech will play BYU again tomorrow at 6 p.m. CT.
