Canady throws complete game and hits two homers as Tech secured game one
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 14 Red Raiders (32-9, 12-1) took game one of a three-game series against Houston (20-17, 3-11) on Friday night at Rocky Johnson Field. Tech won 3-2 as NiJaree Canady picked up her 16th win of the season and hit her fifth and sixth homers of the year.
Tech picked up its 12th Big 12 win of the season in a game that was dominated on both sides by NiJaree Canady. Canady threw a complete game, allowing just two runs and striking out seven Cougars while also driving in all three Red Raider runs via home runs in the second and fourth innings.
Lauren Allred also had a nice night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles as Mihyia Davis picked up the other hit for Tech.
The Red Raiders went up 2-0 early before Houston responded with a run in the fourth inning. Canady immediately got the run back with a solo shot to center field to put Tech in command 3-1.
The Cougars made things interesting late with a two-out solo homer in the top of the seventh, but Tech quickly regrouped and got the next batter out on the next pitch to secure the win.
UP NEXT: Tech will host Houston in game two of the series at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
