New attendance record set at Rocky Johnson Field in Big 12 opener
LUBBOCK, Texas – In front of a record crowd of 2,122 at Rocky Johnson Field the No. 15 Red Raiders (20-6, 2-0) were able to pull out two big wins to open Big 12 play against No. 13 Oklahoma State (15-6, 0-2) on Friday. Tech ended game one early with a 9-0 victory in five innings and then proceeded to shut out the Cowgirls again in game two with a 2-0 victory.
NiJaree Canady and Chloe Riassetto each picked up a win – Canady in game one and Riassetto in game two – as they combined for 12.0 innings of putting zeroes on the scoreboard. The strikeouts weren't as common, but the defense was stout behind them having just one error and recording several impressive plays in the field.
Game One:
Tech jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to three hits and some mistakes by the Cowgirls that led to a pair of fielder's choices. The Red Raiders batted around the order in the opening inning and kept their foot on the gas, adding a run in the third and fourth innings.
In the fifth inning, Alexa Langeliers got her second hit of the game on a double to right center field, Raegan Jennings then followed suite with her own double to swap places and make it a 7-0 game. Bailey Lindemuth then stepped up to the plate and on a 2-0 count she blasted a ball '250 to right center to end the game.
Canady started the game and only ran into trouble once in the third inning but a great throw from Logan Halleman in left field got a Cowgirl runner out at third before they were able to score a run. She allowed just three hits and struck out three in 4.0 innings of work before Riassetto came in relief and posted a three-up-three-down inning to secure the shutout.
Game Two:
Tech carried that momentum at the end of game one into game two as Hailey Toney picked up a one-out single that set up a Lauren Allred double. Toney came around to score on an error in the outfield and Langeliers picked up Allred in the next at-bat with a single to right field to make it 2-0 after the first.
Riassetto pitched a gem, allowing just two hits and one walk in 4.0 innings to pick up the win. Canady then took the role of relief in the fifth inning and posted 3.0 shutout innings, striking out three batters to pick up the save.
