Youth powers Tech to 10-7 win in Trombello’s return

Underclassmen Garet Boehm, Kendyl Johnson and Coleman Ryan helped the Red Raiders erase an early 7-1 deficit
LUBBOCK, Texas – Sophomore Garet Boehm went 3-for-5 with hist first home run of the season, while freshmen Kendyl Johnson and Coleman Ryan tallied a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs to propel Texas Tech past Tarleton, 10-7 Tuesday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Down 7-1 heading to the home half of the fifth, it was the trio of Boehm, Ryan and Johnson that turned the tide for what amounted to Texas Tech's (8-13) fifth win in the last seven games.
Leading off what turned out to be a four-run frame, Boehm took the first pitch he saw from Tarelton's (11-15) Davis Karsen 415-feet to left-center for his first home run of the season.
Tech's next batter, Johnson, dropped down a gorgeous bunt and stole second, allowing Ryan to pull Tech to within 7-3 on an RBI single down the left field line.
After an infield hit from designated hitter Kyeler Thompson and a throwing error placed runners on second and third with nobody out, outfielder Damian Bravo reached on a hit-by-pitch that loaded the bases for sophomore Logan Hughes. Thompson went 3-for-5 on Tuesday and scored twice. He also stole his 17th base of the season in the first.
Ahead in the count 2-1, Tech's next batter, Hughes, ripped a 103 MPH line drive 406-feet to dead center that ultimately ended up being caught at the warning track for a sac-fly.
The Red Raiders ultimately pulled to within 7-5 on another sac-fly from Robin Villeneuve before TSUs Andrew Hardin struck out Davis Rivers swinging stranding Bravo in scoring position.
Back in the game, the Red Raiders turned to freshman Will Jordan who allowed just one over the minimum in a scoreless sixth and seventh. Jordan earned his first career win in the contest striking out two.
With a bit of momentum for the first time since early in the ballgame, Tech put the first two runners of the inning on base in the seventh, when Bravo singled and Hughes walked.
After a wild pitch advanced Bravo to third and Hughes to second, Tarleton erased Bravo on a fielders choice that once again placed a pair in scoring position, this time for Rivers, who ripped a 1-2 offering from TSUs Cort Lowrey for a game-tying single.
Tied for the first time all afternoon, the Red Raiders took the lead three batters later when Johnson split the gap in left-center for a two-run triple that plated Rivers from third and Boehm from second.
Tech's lead immediately grew to three just one batter later, when Ryan ripped an RBI single to left that scored Johnson from third.
Armed with a three-run lead, Tech turned to junior Jonny Lowe, who worked around a pair of infield singles to fire a scoreless eighth before closing out his first career save in the ninth.
The win was extra special for Coach Tim Tadlock's Red Raiders as it featured the return of second year freshman Brady Trombello who took the start on Tuesday.
In his first appearance since suffering a traumatic brain injury last February, Trombello went 1.1 innings and allowed two hits and two runs (one earned). Trombello struck out all four batters he retired.
In the victory, Tech received multiple hits from five (Thompson, Bravo, Boehm, Johnson and Ryan) of its nine hitters and got multiple RBIs from Hughes, Johnson and Ryan. The multiple hit game for Ryan was hit third-straight, as the infielder went 2-for-3 on Saturday against TCU and 2-for-4 against the Frogs on Sunday.
