Tech uses the long ball to improve to 6-0 on the weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 12 Red Raiders improved to 6-0 in the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic after a 7-2 win over (RV) Indiana (10-3) and a 3-0 win over UTEP (9-4) on Sunday afternoon.
Alana Johnson hit a grand slam for the second straight day as Tech (14-3) used a seven-run fifth inning to take down the Hoosiers. Indiana was leading 1-0 for most of the game after they singled home a run in the third inning, and although Tech was getting on base and hitting the ball hard, they weren't able to plate anything until the fifth.
Mihyia Davis got a triple to lead off the fifth and two fielder's choices later, Tech had the bases loaded with no outs. NiJaree Canady came to the plate and was hit by a pitch to tie the game at 1-1 before Alana Johnson launched her second grand slam of the weekend to put Tech in front 5-1.
Two at bats late, after Alexa Langeliers reached on a single, Bailey Lindemuth hit her second home run of the season to make it a 7-1 game.
The Hoosiers were able to add a late run in the top of the seventh but nothing more as Canady improved to 6-2 in the circle.
Against the Miners, Samantha Lincoln, Brenlee Gonzales and Chloe Riassetto combined for a six-hit shutout as Lincoln improved to 4-1 and Riassetto picked up her second save of the season.
Lauren Allred got things started for Tech in the first inning with a two-run homer that drove in Davis. The only other scoring would come from the bat of Hailey Toney who roped a double into right-center field to bring Davis home to score again.
