Volleyball plays host to Houston and Utah in final week of play
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball (10-18, 2-14) will play host to Houston (8-19, 1-15) and Utah (14-13, 6-10) before and after the Thanksgiving holiday. Tech will host Houston at 6 p.m. on Wednesday before celebrating senior day following its match against Utah on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the United Supermarkets Arena.
The Red Raiders will celebrate seniors Peyton Dunn, Jasmine Martin and Aliyah McDonald on Saturday as they will suit up in a Texas Tech uniform for the final time.
Historically, Tech is 19-34 against the Cougars, including a 3-1 loss earlier in the season that the Red Raiders will look to respond to too. Against the Utes, Tech is 7-10-1 and are riding a five-match winning streak that includes a win in their meeting last season. This will be just the second time in program history that Utah will play in Lubbock and the 20th time that Houston will make the trip to West Texas.
Quick Recap:
Tech is coming off a tough road trip that saw them play two top 25 teams back-to-back in No. 23 Baylor and No. 20 TCU. The Red Raiders gave the Horned Frogs all they could handle, as they were down 2-0 before coming back and forcing a fifth set. Tech was up 8-4 early in the final set before TCU made a run to comeback and fend off the Red Raiders.
Freshmen Kalli Jioshvili Ravva and Kenna McKenzie were exceptional in that match, combining for 35 kills as Jioshvili Ravva recorded her eighth double-double of the season. Dunn picked up her third double-double of the season going for 42 assists and 12 digs while Sierra Grizzle recorded a season-high 30 digs while tying her career high for aces with five. Katelyn Cochran and Maddie Smotherman were also lethal from the service line, each recording three aces of their own which was a season high for both players.
Quick Hits:
Kalli Jioshvili Ravva has been exceptionally through Big 12 play, leading the Red Raiders in points, kills and attacks while also being second in digs and third in aces. After not playing much to begin the season, the French native has been a mainstay in the lineup and has helped propel Tech to its two wins against UCF and Arizona where she combined for 33 kills and nine digs while hitting an efficient .229 on 83 attempts.
For most players, a "sophomore slump" is a common occurrence. For Addie Kanouff, her sophomore year has been a welcomed sight for the Red Raiders. After appearing in just four matches last season, the 6'5 rightside has taken on a much bigger role this year and she has performed brilliantly. Kanouff is currently second on the team in points (255.5), kills (225), hitting percentage (.224) and blocks (55.0). She recorded a career-high 16 kills in Tech's win over UAlbany and has recorded seven matches where she has hit over .300 with 10+ kills.
Freshmen Kenna McKenzie and Shelby Ignash have seen increased playing time over the course of the preseason as they continue to take advantage of their opportunities. Setters Peyton Dunn and Katelyn Cochran have done a stellar job of setting up their hitter for success as Cochran recently recorded 52 assists in a match, a career best. Sierra Grizzle is top 20 in the country in total digs (538) and currently leads the Big 12 in total digs and digs per set (4.80).
The Red Raiders are the only team in the country to have at least nine freshmen while also having zero true seniors. Tech has three graduate seniors and are one of just four teams in the country that has zero true seniors joining Princeton, Villanova and Memphis in this unique feat. Tech's nine freshmen are also the second most in the country behind St. Mary's, Pacific, Holy Cross and Wichita St. who all have 10.
