LUBBOCK, Texas – Two Lady Raiders scored 20+ points and senior Snudda Collins surpassed 1,000 career points as Texas Tech downed the SMU Mustangs, 91-60, on Thursday evening at the United Supermarkets Arena.
Senior Bailey Maupin scored a team-high 26 points for Tech (4-0) and added four rebounds, five assists, a steal and a career-best two blocks. In addition, Maupin shot 60 percent from the field (9-for-15) and scored a team and career-best of four 3-pointers. Junior Jalynn Bristow recorded the first double-double of her career after totaling 20 points and a career-high of 10 rebounds against SMU (1-2). She totaled three blocks and two steals while shooting 50 percent from the field (6-for-12).
Collins needed 11 points to reach 1,000 career points and she got 17 after going 6-for-8 (.750) from the field. Senior Jada Malone also had a double-figure scoring game with a season-best 10 points and added five rebounds, with four coming on the offensive side. Gemma Núñez led the team in assists with six and also grabbed six boards in the game.
The Lady Raiders shot 54.4 percent from the field (31-for-57) and 47.4 percent from behind the arc (9-for-19) against SMU. Totaling 16 assists, nine blocks and 11 steals, the Lady Raiders held the Mustangs to just 22-for-73 from the field (.301) and forced 16 turnovers. Tech was able to score its first 90+ point game since Dec. 5, 2023 versus Sam Houston State and recorded its second quarter this season of 30+ points with 30 in the first.
Maupin began the game with the first six points after scoring a three, then making the free throw right after being fouled on the shot. After Bristow got back-to-back blocks to force a shotclock turnover for SMU, Maupin connected with a layup to give Tech a 6-0 lead. Bristow scored two free throws for an 8-0 advantage before SMU finally scored its first points at the 6:42 mark with free throws. Tech answered with a 4-0 run thanks to a layup from Sarengbe Sanogo and two free throws from Maupin. The defense was on point as Bristow got two consecutive steals that led to buckets. Denae Fritz extended the lead with a 3-pointer, then Collins scored one of her own. SMU hit a three at the end of the quarter as Tech led 30-12.
SMU forced a Texas Tech timeout at 7:38 in the second period after the Mustangs went on an 8-0 run. Malone came in and stopped the SMU momentum with a layup. The Mustangs answered with one of their own before a jumper from Bristow sparked a Lady Raider 10-0 run, highlighted by buckets from Maupin and Collins. SMU scored the next five points after that before Maupin nailed another 3-pointer for the 45-27 lead. Collins ended the quarter with a free throw as the Lady Raiders held a 17-point advantage heading into the half.
Sanogo began the third period with a layup, but SMU hit a three to answer. Bristow connected with a couple of free throws to help Tech start an 11-0 run and force a Mustang timeout. In the run, Malone scored six-straight points and Bristow made a 3-pointer. The momentum carried after the timeout as Maupin blocked a shot, then Bristow made a 3-pointer thanks to a dish from Núñez. Sidney Love grabbed a steal and passed it to Maupin for a fastbreak layup as the Lady Raiders led 64-32 at the media timeout. Tech held SMU scoreless for over five minutes before the Mustangs scored a three at the 3:01 mark. The Lady Raiders closed the quarter out with four-straight free throws to extend their lead, 73-42.
Love made two free throws, followed by a Maupin triple to begin the fourth quarter. SMU answered with the next four points before Collins went on a run of her own – scoring four points and blocking a shot, which led to a fastbreak layup from Fritz. SMU made back-to-back threes but Maupin stopped the run with a bucket and free throw with 4:19 left. Both teams went back-and-forth after that as the Lady Raiders held on to win it by a 91-60 score.
Up next, the Lady Raiders host the Arkansas Razorbacks on Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. in the United Supermarkets Arena.

Head Coach Krista Gerlich
Opening statement…
"I'm so proud of the effort that we started with on this game. From the tip, our kids were on a mission, and starting with Bailey, knocking down shots and pushing the pace. We played good team defense, especially early, and then and we just kept the foot on the pedal. I really enjoyed our players sharing the basketball and just how tough they played. SMU is a good basketball team, they're well coached and they're going to win a lot of games. We knew that they would try to pressure us up and try to turn us over. So probably the stat that I am most pleased with is the lack of turnovers. Thirteen, you want to be under 12, but to be 13 against that type of pressure, I think, is really, good. So overall, great win for our program. It's an ACC school that we have on our home court that we handedly beat and I am really excited about the next two games that are coming in."
Junior guard/forward Jalynn Bristow
On being aggressive and attacking the basket…
"Yeah, of course, it gets everybody else open, and when everyone's aggressive, they're where they need to be… Especially when we talk about pace all the time. So I think that definitely helps."
Senior guard Bailey Maupin
On the team defense…
"When you're playing defense and you knock it out five, six, seven times… It just deflates the other team, and when they get deflated, we smell blood, and we know it's time to go."
