
Pawlak earns first career ranked singles win

WACO, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders saw a player advance to the singles Round of 16 and two players make the doubles Round of 16 at the ITA Texas Regional tournament, recording 10 total wins over three days in Waco. Â
The Red Raiders got things started on Thursday with freshman Brody Nejedly-Krall and senior Sebastian Abboud competing in the qualifying singles draw. Both Red Raiders were able to qualify for the main draw after picking up two singles wins. First, the freshman never lost a set, defeating Ethan Boswell (Prairie View A&M), 7-5, 6-4, then beating 6-seeded Daniel Perez-Caraballo (UT Arlington), 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the main draw.
Abboud added to the win total when he overtook Lamar's Guy Dagan in back-to-back breakers, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7), before downing Incarnate Word's Marcel Miralles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, to advance. Abboud continued to win as he added a victory in the Round of 64 of the main draw against Lamar's Lukas Hamacher by a 6-4, 6-2 score. Abboud would fall in a three-setter the following round to Texas A&M'S Tiago Pires, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.
Piotr Pawlak was on a roll in singles, making it the furthest out of all the Red Raiders as he advanced to the Round of 16 in the main draw. The Warsaw, Poland native earned his Round of 64 win against Baylor's Oskar Brostrom Poulsen, who was ranked as high as No. 60 in his career, with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 score. Then, Pawlak recorded his first career ranked singles win when he defeated 7-seeded and No. 112-ranked Luke Casper of Texas A&M, 6-2, 6-4. He advanced to the Round of 16 where he fell in a tough match to No. 124-ranked Lucas Brown of Texas.
The Red Raiders also had a third player reach the second round of the main draw in singles as Tyler Stewart picked up a victory against Josef Zapletal (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) in a dominant, 6-1, 6-1 outing. Stewart also paired up with Tech newcomer, Felipe Pagnacco, as the duo became the only Tech pair to win their main draw match. Securing a bye in the first round as the 9-16 seeds, the Red Raider pair took down Baylor's Justin Braverman and Luis Jose Nakamine, 8-4, in the following round.
Up next, the Red Raiders compete at the SMU Invitational on Nov. 1-3 in Dallas, Texas.
