Texas Tech’s student-athlete population accounted for a 3.359 semester GPA this fall, its highest on record
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics experienced its best semester all-time in the classroom this fall as the university's more than 400 student-athletes combined for a record 3.359 grade point average.
Texas Tech has continually reset the standard for academic success in recent years as this is the 18th-consecutive semester the department has recorded at least a 3.0 term GPA. Prior to this fall, the department's highest term GPA was set during the fall 2022 semester when Texas Tech's student-athletes combined for a 3.31 GPA that semester. Â
"We are proud to celebrate another record-setting semester in the classroom by our student-athletes," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "Each and every semester, our student-athletes continue to raise the bar in terms of what success looks like academically. We can't commend our student-athletes and the staff at the Marsha Sharp Center enough for the countless hours and dedication that contributed to this record-breaking achievement."
Texas Tech boasted 11 of its 13 teams* with both their semester and cumulative GPA over a 3.0 with five of those – volleyball (3.55), men's golf (3.63), women's tennis (3.73), soccer (3.73) and women's golf (3.76) – all finishing with at least a 3.5 GPA for the semester. Soccer was one of three programs to post its highest fall semester GPA on record, joining both baseball (3.2) and women's track and field (3.41). It marked the highest term GPA on record for Wes Kittley's women's track program.
The department now lists a 3.368 cumulative GPA as 12 of 13 programs have combined for a 3.0 or better as a team. The women's golf program leads campus with a 3.76 cumulative GPA followed by soccer at 3.73, women's tennis at 3.62, men's golf at 3.59, volleyball at 3.54 and men's tennis at 3.49.
For the soccer program, the Red Raiders boasted 18 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA this fall, approximately 62 percent of the roster. Their success academically matched their performance on the field as Tom Stone's program claimed its first Big 12 regular-season title and advanced to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championship for the second time in history.
In total, Texas Tech had 88 student-athletes (21 percent of total population) with a perfect term 4.0 GPA, while approximately 299 student-athletes completed the term with a 3.0 GPA or higher (71 percent). The department also boasted 93 student-athletes on the Dean's List and 73 that appeared on the President's List.
Texas Tech student-athletes have a dedicated staff at the Marsha Sharp Center who guide each student-athlete to success from the time of enrollment to graduation. The Marsha Sharp Center provides space for private study, computer labs, supplemental instruction classrooms and private conferencing areas for tutoring and mentoring appointments.
Note: For reporting purposes, the sport of track and field was combined into two teams based on gender, using rosters from indoor, outdoor and cross country seasons.
