Houston heads to Lubbock for Wednesday game

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders are back at home as they host the Houston Cougars on Wednesday, January 24 at 6 p.m. in the United Supermarkets Arena.
Tech leads the all-time series against the Cougars, 39-15, as the Lady Raiders got the win to start conference play at Houston on December 30, 2023 by a 79-71 score. Texas Tech (14-6, 3-4 Big 12) is coming off a loss to BYU in Provo, Utah last weekend. In that game, Jasmine Shavers led the team with 16 points and posted her 15th double-figure scoring game of the season. Bailey Maupin tallied her team-best 18th double-digit performance of the year when she posted 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field.
The Lady Raiders are currently averaging 69.0 points per game and holding their opponents to 59.7 points. Tech is shooting 41.2 percent from the field and 33.2 percent from the 3-point line. Nationally, Texas Tech is ranked 40th in free throws per game with 14.80 and are atop the Big 12 with 76.3 percent from the free throw line.
Tech's defense has been great all year as the team is 37th in the NCAA with 19.90 turnovers forced per game, while also ranking 56th as they hold teams to 27,8 percent from behind the arc. Maupin and Shavers are currently leading the Lady Raiders with 15.1 and 14.7 points per game, respectively. On the rebounding side of things, Kilah Freelon leads the team with 5.9 per game, followed by Jordyn Merritt with 5.6 and Shavers with 5.5.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Houston Cougars are coming into the game with an 11-7 overall record and are 2-5 in conference play. Most recently, Houston picked up wins against BYU (79-69) and TCU (77-66). The Cougars are currently on a two-game losing streak after dropping games at West Virginia (39-80) and against Oklahoma (65-71). As a team, the Cougars are good defensively as they force 23.28 turnovers per game, which is good for sixth in the nation. In addition, they rank ninth in the NCAA with 12.5 steals per game. Houston's bench is solid as they are averaging 28.9 points per game, ranking 11th in that category. The Cougars are totaling 72.4 points per game, while holding opponents to just 68.0 points per game. Houston has two players who are averaging double-figure scoring in Laila Blair with 15.9 and N'Yah Boyd with 10.6. Kamryn Jones leads the team with 4.8 rebounds per game, followed by Bria Patterson with 4.5
