Despite a doubles win from Franco Ribero and Ilgiz Valiev Tech fell 4-0 Sunday
SALT LAKE CITY – The Texas Tech men's tennis program fell to undefeated Utah 4-0, Sunday afternoon at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (4-3) did receive a strong doubles performance from Franco Ribero and Ilgiz Valiev as the duo combined for a 6-2 victory over Mathias Gavelin and Jayson Blando of Utah.
Issac Arevalo and Reed Collier had a match point on doubles court one that would have secured the doubles points, but the duo ultimately fell to Utah's Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Espin 7-5.
In singles action, the Red Raiders were swept by the Utes who improved to a perfect 8-0 on the young season.
Singles highlights included Collier winning an epic 10-8 tiebreaker over Bruno Caula and Dimitrios Azoidis winning his opening set against Blando. Collier was down 4-2 in the second set when the match was called, while Azoidis was up 3-0 in the decisive third set before action was concluded.
HEAD COACH DANNY WHITEHEAD:
"This was a tough match for us today, dropping a 4-0 decision to a good Utah team. Based on the results at the time the match was called we really just needed to have one match go differently, because we had leads in two matches that weren't finished. We had a match point that would have secured the doubles point but it didn't go our way. Utah's home crowd was great and made a big difference. Overall, we played better today than we did yesterday. We came out and were more aggressive, but this was a tough match. I'm proud of our guys for making improvements on what we mentioned from yesterday, but it wasn't enough. We'll regroup and get back home where we'll have a few chances to pick-up ranked wins. We'll keep fighting and improving. #WreckEm."
UP NEXT:
Texas Tech finally returns home for the first time since Jan. 13 when they welcome Louisiana and New Mexico State on Saturday. First serve is set for 10 a.m. against ULL, while the NM State match is set for a 2 p.m. first serve. The Red Raiders played their last five matches away from the McLeod Tennis Center, including a pair of road matches at SMU and Utah.
