Fulford Named CoSIDA Academic All-American
June 11, 2020 | Baseball
Lubbock native is the program’s first Academic All-American since 2002
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior catcher Braxton Fulford added another prestigious academic honor to his collection as he was named to CoSIDA's Academic All-America Third Team on Thursday.
Â
Fulford becomes the 11th Academic All-American in program history and the first since Steve Rowe earned second team honors in 2002.
Tech is the only school in the Big 12 or in the state represented on this year's list. Of the 33 players honored, Fulford is one of three catchers.
Â
This is the latest academic achievement for the Lubbock native, who was awarded with the NCAA Elite 90 Award at the 2019 College World Series for holding the highest GPA of any student-athlete on site in Omaha. Â Â
Â
A finance major, Fulford was one of three Red Raiders named to CoSIDA's Academic All-District 7 team in May, along with right-handed pitcher Clayton Beeter and senior infielder Brian Klein. Tech was one of four schools in the nation with three selections at the All-District level, including Harvard, Duke and the U.S. Naval Academy.
Â
In addition to a pair of Academic All-District nods in his career, Fulford has been named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team each of the last two seasons.
Â
Fulford not only got it done in the classroom, but has proven his value on the diamond as well for back-to-back Big 12 titles and consecutive runs to the College World Series. He started behind the plate in 57 of Tech's 66 games in 2019 while hitting a team-best .406 during the postseason.
Â
He carried his strong play into the 2020 season where he had already driven in 11 runs and held a .379 on base percentage while receiving from one of the most dynamic pitching staffs in the country.
Â
Despite the cancellation of spring competition during COVID-19, CoSIDA continued its sponsorship of the Academic All-America awards program. Student-athletes were selected based on career statistics.
