LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior second baseman Brian Klein, sophomore relief pitcher Micah Dallas and redshirt freshman shortstop Cal Conley have been named All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the publication announced Tuesday.
Â
Klein and Dallas represented the Red Raiders on the second team while Conley was tabbed to the third team. Tech's three selections led the Big 12 Conference and were the most in the state of Texas.Â
This is first All-America honor for Klein and Conley and the second of Dallas's career, as he was named a Freshman All-American by D1Baseball.com last season.
Â
This marks the fifth straight year Tech has been represented on the publication's All-America list. Josh Jung was a second-team member in 2019, while he and Grant Little (third team) were both recognized in 2018. Steven Gingery (first team) made the list in 2017, and Eric Gutierrez (second team) earned a nod in 2016.
Â
Klein entered 2020 on the national radar and did not disappoint despite the shortened season. He hit .391/.580/.494 in 69 at-bats with nine multi-hit games. The Keller, Texas, native led the Big 12 and ranked second nationally with 10 doubles and added 13 RBI. His season highlights included a Big 12 Player of the Week nod following Tech's sweep in Tallahassee and a walk-off single against Houston at the Round Rock Classic. He also posted a 1.000 fielding percentage.
Â
Dallas opened 2020 as a key weapon out of the bullpen, where he went 1-0 with three saves in five appearances and an impressive 0.57 ERA. The Aubrey, Texas, native struck out 23 opposing batters and walked just one. He posted two outings of 3.0 innings where he did not allow a hit, including the season opener where he and Clayton Beeter combined for a two-hitter. He also came up clutch with 3.2 innings of relief in Tech's extra-inning win at No. 9 Florida State and 4.0 shutout frames in Tech's win over Stanford in Round Rock.
Â
Conley was one of several Tech freshmen to boast strong starts to the 2020 season, hitting .371/.643/.444 in 18 starts. The Mount Carmel, Ohio, native ranked eighth nationally with 24 RBI, 15th nationally with eight doubles and 23rd nationally in total bases. He led the team with seven multi-RBI performances, was second with seven multi-hit games and was also 5-for-5 in stolen bases. His season highlights include a Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award, a game-tying home run in the seventh inning at No. 9 Florida State and an inside-the-park home run against Northern Colorado.
Â
The Collegiate Baseball All-America teams reflect all games played before the season was stopped in mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic. The vast majority of teams in NCAA Division I played 15-19 games before the season was shut down.
Â
The Red Raiders ended the season at 16-3 overall and reached No. 1 in the polls for the first time since 1997.
