Men's Tennis Nearly Upsets No. 7 USC
March 14, 2017 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders picked up singles wins at the top three spots of the lineup.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team almost overcame a 3-0 hole to upset No. 7 Southern Cal and fought back to a 4-3 decision on Tuesday at Marks Stadium.
The Red Raiders (6-10) collected victories in the top three singles positions highlighted by a pair of Top 50 wins courtesy of Jolan Cailleau and Bjorn Thomson.
Cailleau dialed up a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision over No. 16 Brandon Holt at the top of the lineup, while Thomson remained undefeated in dual match action with his 11th straight victory on the strength of an efficient 6-2, 6-2 triumph against No. 45 Logan Smith on court two.
Connor Curry registered a 6-0, 7-5 win versus Nick Crystal in the No. 3 spot to bring Texas Tech within 3-2 after the Red Raiders faced an early 3-0 deficit.
USC's Jack Jaede garnered a 6-2, 7-6 (5) decision versus Sendegeya on the No. 4 line to clinch the match and give the Trojans (15-2) their fourth point.
"I'm proud of some of the individual wins, but we just can't quite get over the hump," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "We've been showing that we can play with these top programs, but we need to be able to come through against one of them to kickstart something. Our players will continue to work hard, and we're close to getting those types of wins."
Curry and Thomson validated their newly minted No. 33 doubles ranking and rolled past No. 19 Holt and Riley Smith with a convincing 6-0 victory on the No. 1 line. The pair improved to an impressive 7-1 record and captured its second Top 20 win of the season.
USC answered behind Crystal and Laurens Verboven who claimed a 6-1 decision over Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura on court two.
The matchup at the No. 3 position was a back-and-forth affair that featured several momentum swings. A late break by USC's Rob Bellamy and Jaede tucked away a 7-5 win against Jackson Cobb and Sendegeya to give the Trojans the 1-0 advantage.
USC extended its lead to 3-0 behind straight-set wins from the bottom of the lineup. Thibault Forget and Riley Smith lost a combined four games against Pyry Hyrkkönen and Cobb, respectively.
Texas Tech finishes its spring break road trip against No. 35 Indiana on Thursday in California. First serve is on-tap for 2 p.m. CT from the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
The Red Raiders next home match is Friday, March 24 versus Memphis. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT from the McLeod Tennis Center. Admission is free to all home tennis matches.
