Men's Tennis Upends No. 35 Indiana, 4-3
March 16, 2017 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders earn their second win over an ITA Top 50 opponent.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team wrapped up their eight-match road swing on a high note courtesy of 4-3 victory over No. 35 Indiana on Thursday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in San Diego.
The Red Raiders (7-10) captured their second win over an ITA Top 50 opponent, while Indiana (9-6) has dropped six of its last eight matches since starting the season with a 7-0 record.
"We played hard today and smart," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "That's what I was most happy with is we were successful because we played our game. It was tough losing that doubles point again. We could have had a slow start after that, but we didn't let it affect us. We came out of the gates hot and built up some leads. A great week for the Top 3 winning both of their singles matches, they led us. (Alex Sendegeya) Sendy did a great job changing his game to his style for the second and third set. The guy didn't have a chance once Alex showed he wasn't going to stop coming forward. I'm excited to come home now and get a big match next Friday versus Memphis. We need everyone to come out and support the boys."
All square at 2-2, Jolan Cailleau and Alex Sendegeya took the Red Raiders home. No. 63 Cailleau outlasted Antonio Cembellin by a 6-2, 7-5 margin at the No. 1 singles line.
Sendegeya ripped off 12 of the last 14 games after he dropped the opening set by a 6-3 margin on court four. The victory was highlighted by a 6-0 triumph in set three.
Indiana's Zac Brodney (IU) edged out Jackson Cobb in a hard-fought 7-6 (5), 7-5 matchup at the bottom of the lineup for the 4-3 margin.
The Hoosiers claimed the early 1-0 advantage in doubles. Texas Tech struck first after Cailleau and Carlis DiLaura registered a 6-2 win against Bennett Crane and Brodney.
Indiana answered when Alfonso Selgado and Keivon Tabrizi picked up a 6-3 victory versus Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya.
The Hoosiers kept the momentum and captured the doubles point as Antonio Cembellin and Stefon Lugonic notched a tightly contested 7-6 (5) against No. 33 Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson.
Texas Tech rattled off a pair of straight-set wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to gain a 2-1 advantage. Thomson stayed undefeated and routed Tabrizi on the strength of a 6-0, 6-2 win. Then, Curry rattled off a 6-3, 6-3 victory versus Matthew McCoy.
The Hoosiers evened up the tally at 2-2 as Oliver Sec (IU) defeated DiLaura by a 6-1, 7-6 (4) scoreline.
The Red Raiders return home to face Memphis next Friday on March 24. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT from the McLeod Tennis Center. Admission is free to all home tennis matches.
