
Men's Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision to Vanderbilt

The Red Raiders will host a doubleheader Friday at the McLeod Tennis
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team wiped away an early 2-0 deficit to even the match, but Vanderbilt used a strong finishing kick to claim a 5-2 decision Sunday at the Curey Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (2-5) have been dealt four consecutive losses, while Vanderbilt (8-3) scored the last three points of the match to improve to 7-2 at home this season.
The Commodores captured the doubles point behind victories on courts one and three. Lachlan McPhee and Billy Rowe won five of the six games en route to a 6-2 win over Jolan Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura at the No. 3 position.
Texas Tech answered on the No. 2 doubles line when Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson registered a 6-2 triumph of their own versus Baker Newman and Panu Virtanen. The duo finished on a strong note and reeled off four consecutive games for the win.
Vanderbilt's Pen Binet and Cameron Klinger outlasted Ronit Bisht and Alex Sendegeya by a 6-3 margin at the top spot to give the Commodores the rubber match and the 1-0 edge.
Rowe was the first to the finish line during singles play to extend the Vanderbilt lead to 2-0. He ended Bisht's four-match winning streak with a 6-2, 6-2 decision on court five.
The Red Raiders rallied behind Thomson and Sendegeya in the No. 3 and No. 4 slots to deadlock the score at 2-2.
Thomson was the first to finish with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Newman to push his singles winning streak to five consecutive matches. He took control of the match with four straight games to close the first set and won the opening three games of set two.
After splitting the first two sets, Sendegeya rattled off the closing three games of the winner-take-all third set to take a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph over McPhee.
Vanderbilt regained a 3-2 advantage courtesy of a 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4 comeback decision from Klinger over Cailleau on the No. 1 singles line. The Commodores clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win by Virtanen against Hyrkkönen at the bottom of the lineup.
Vanderbilt completed the 5-2 victory when Daniel Valent earned a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 3-3 default decision versus Curry in a matchup of ranked players on court two.
Texas Tech returns home for a doubleheader versus UTSA and Abilene Christian on Friday. First serves are slated for 12 p.m. CT and 5 p.m. CT at the McLeod Tennis Center. Admission is free to all home matches with free pizza served for all fans while supplies last.
