February 10, 2017 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders travel to No. 25 Texas A&M on Sunday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team snapped its four-match losing streak with a pair of convincing wins over UTSA (4-0) and Abilene Christian (6-1) during a Friday doubleheader at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (4-5) were sparked by Jackson Cobb who made his dual match debut. The freshman earned the match-clinching doubles points and collected a pair of singles wins on the day.
"It felt good that we had 85 degree weather, a little Lubbock Breeze and a little home cooking. That never hurts," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "I think we played well under the conditions with the heat. That was nice because the balls fly a little bit better. We can really use that to our advantage.
Doubles against UTSA started slow with two of the courts dropping their opening games. The Red Raiders overcame the early deficit for a clinch by Cobb and Alex Sendegeya in the No. 3 spot.
Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson breezed through their double outing at the top of the lineup only dropping one game to a 6-1 decision over UTSA's Kai Breitbach and Axel Cronje to gain an early 1-0 lead over the Roadrunners.
Fabian Brand and Igor Cantanhede of UTSA took ahold of court two and defeated Tech's Carlos DiLaura and Pyry Hrykönnen 6-2, to even up the doubles tally at 1-1.
Cobb made his debut on the doubles line with Sendegeya for the deciding point. After taking the lead over UTSA's Christian Carrillo and Juri Reckow from an early 2-1 margin. An overhead smash by Sendegeya gained a break and a 4-2 advantage. The duo saw themselves in a 15-40 hole in the next game only to come back to secure the insurance break at 5-2. Then, Cobb belted an ace at 40-40 to close out the 6-2 triumph and secure the doubles point for the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech carried the momentum of the doubles point into singles play and quickly won five of the six first sets.
First to cross the finish line was Sendegeya, who skated through Cronje in a quick 6-0 first set. He raced out to a 5-2 edge in set two, but Cronje closed the gap to 5-4. Sendegeya was able to reset himself and close out the 6-4 decision to stretch Texas Tech's lead to 2-0.
DiLaura only surrendered one game to Carrillo at the No. 5 position. He rattled off four consecutive games to claim a 6-1 win. The two players split the opening six games of the second set before DiLaura ultimately came out on top with a 6-3 victory to push the Red Raiders advantage to 3-0.
Curry wrapped up Texas Tech's second set sweep of the season on the No. 1 singles line. After he notched a 6-3 first set victory, Curry finished strong with a bagel second set against Breitbach who he also faced in doubles.
Still in action when play was stopped was Thomson who was on the brink and ahead by a 6-2, 5-3 margin versus Reckow on court two.
Hrykönnen just started a first set tiebreaker with UTSA's Takeru Watanabe when the match was called in the No. 5 slot whereas Cobb held a 6-2, 3-2 edge against Leon Hein at the bottom of the lineup.
"I think Jackson did an awesome job," Masi said. "For his first dual-match as a freshman, he came in and clinched two doubles points. Then, he went out and won a singles point. That's an awesome experience for him and for our team."
The Red Raiders kept chugging along a few hours later when they faced Abilene Christian.
Texas Tech collected another doubles point. Curry and Thomson dropped a single game and put away ACU's Nico Agritelley and Henry Adams by a 6-1 margin.
Moments later, Cobb and Sendegeya notched a 6-3 win over Jonathan Sheehy and Cole Lawson, clinching yet another doubles point for Texas Tech on court three.
???????DiLaura and Hrykönnen were in the middle of erasing a 3-0 deficit against Josh Sheehy and Sebastian Langdon. They cut the margin down to 4-3 when play was halted.
Texas Tech rolled out wins from the bottom of its lineup with DiLaura steamrolling through Adams by a 6-1, 6-1 margin to give the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead.
Cobb and Thomson each picked up a pair of straight-set triumphs on courts six and two, respectively, to make the advantage 4-0 over the Wildcats.
Hunter Holman bested Hrykönnen in the No. 4 spot with a 6-3, 6-2 victory for ACU's lone point. Curry responded with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Agritelley at the top position. All eyes turned to Sendegeya as he picked up a 6-2, 6-4 match over Jonathan Sheehy in the final match.
"I put the Texas A&M match on the schedule because I know the guys really wanted a chance to play them," Masi said. "I think we built some good momentum here. We didn't take too long out there, and we took care of business quickly. We'll be ready for Sunday"
