Red Forces Decisive Game Five With 8-2 Win Sunday

The Red squad racks up eight runs on 16 hits in Sunday’s victory
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech baseball team completed game four of the annual Red & Black series with an 8-2 victory by the Red squad on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The Red team (2-2) racked up eight runs on 16 hits to force a winner-take-all game five against the Black squad (2-2) on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m.

Seven different members of the Red team produced multi-hit performances in game four, with sophomore Josh Jung tallying four hits and two runs scored. Freshman Braxton Fulford and senior Michael Davis each drove in three runs, while Fulford also recorded three hits against the Black team.

Over in the visitor dugout, senior Connor Beck and freshman Gabe Holt each had multi-hit days at the plate, with Beck coming a triple shy of the cycle, along with two runs scored.

Sophomore Jake McDonald picked up the start for the Red squad and tossed 4.0 frames on Sunday. He allowed just three hits and one run, while striking out six. The Red pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts as sophomore Caleb Freeman rung up four, freshman Dane Haveman had three and senior Jose Quezada picked up another in the final frame.

The Red team got on the board first in the opening frame, plating three for a 3-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Davis brought in the first run of the day on a sacrifice fly to score junior Cody Farhat for the 1-0 lead. After a walk to senior Zach Rheams to load the bases again, Fulford drove an 0-2 double to left field to score sophomores Josh Jung and Clay Koelzer to make it 3-0.

Black picked up its first run of the day in the top of the second after an RBI groundout from freshman Brock Martin scored Beck, who opened the inning with a double off the left field wall. Black threatened with another after Holt roped a double down the first base line with two out & moved to third on an error, but was stranded there on an inning-ending strikeout to keep it 3-1.

Red added another in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI single from Farhat. Rheams and Fulford began the frame with back-to-back singles to left field. Then, a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Brian Klein moved both into scoring position. With one gone, Farhat laced the RBI knock to left field for the 4-1 lead.

With two down in the fifth inning, Davis ripped a single to right field to score junior Cameron Warren, who found his way to third after a walk, a stolen base and a wild pitch. Immediately after Davis' hit, Rheams roped a double a double inside the right field line to push the advantage to 6-1.

Black got another run back in the top of the sixth behind a solo homer over the left-center field wall to make it a four-run game at 6-2. In the bottom of the seventh, Red tacked on another two-out run after Fulford brought in Koelzer on an RBI single to left field, then a Davis double in the eighth scored sophomore Josh Jung to make it 8-2. The fifth and final game of the series is slated for Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park.
